Week of 11-20-09

Progress Report:  I am sending home the first progress report for the 2nd marking period in your child's Friday Folder. The progress report reflects all work that was turned in at the end of the day on Wednesday, November 18.  Please sign the attached slip and have your child return on Monday.  Thank you!!

Book Orders:  On Wednesday, I sent home 3 book order forms.  Book orders are due next Wednesday, November 25.  This will be the last book order before Christmas.

Math:  We finished Chapter 5 on dividing by 1 digit and had a test on Tuesday.  If your child had to correct their test, it was returned to them on Wednesday.  We reviewed prime numbers and started our next chapter on dividing by 2 digit numbers.

Social Studies:  We have spent this week reading over information in our Social Studies book on European Explorers to prepare the students for their explorers research project.  You should have had a copy of a packet brought home with your child on Monday explaining the project in detail.  Next week we will begin doing research and instruction on how to organize/write a research paper.  Thank you in advance for your support of this learning project.

Science:  We completed a lesson on graphing the length of day.  We are  focusing this week on the motion of the Earth around the sun.

ELA (ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS):  We are still reading the chapter historical fiction book The Fighting Ground.  Students have been working on vocabulary, fluency, expression, answering comprehension questions, and focus questions.  We have also been working on some grammar lessons focusing on sentence/sentence fragments and different kinds of sentences.  We have also discussed the importance of using capital letters and periods correctly in a sentence.

Thanksgiving Week:  I realize that Thanksgiving week is a very busy week for many families.  With that in mind, there will be no weekly homework sheet sent home next week.  I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!!
