Grade 4 – Language Arts November 9 to November 13, 2009
Veterans’ Day Mass – Friday, November 13, 2009 – 1:15 We will be honoring our veterans during Mass on Friday. Please come and celebrate with us.
Parent/Teacher Conferences – Wednesday, November 11 Conference times will be sent home on Monday, November 9.
Food Drive – November 6 – 17 The Student Council is sponsoring a food drive for The North Hills Community Food Bank. Non-perishable food items are being collected in each classroom.
Grade 4 Book It The last day to turn in signed “Book It” slips for November is December 4. “Book It” is worth a 20 point reading grade.
Absence Notes Please remember to send in a signed note when your child returns from an absence. This needs to be done even if the school was notified via email or the electronic attendance system.
Anti-Bullying Program – Presented after each of the Friday Masses Ms. Shick and I will be presenting an “Anti-Bullying Program” after each of the Friday Masses. Some of the activities include role-playing, journaling, and group discussion.
Activities:
11/6/09 – The fourth grade discussed how bullying situations should be handled. As typical situations were brought up, the children discussed what they would do in that situation. The teachers emphasized that adults need to be made aware of any situation where the children feel uncomfortable or feel as if they are being bullied.
10/30/09 – Halloween party
10/23/09 - The 4th grade discussed examples of bullying and appropriate responses to those situations. The difference between telling & tattling was also addressed. In addition, students completed the 10/23 bullying survey, noting any positive/negative interactions with classmates during the week.
10/2/2009 – The class discussed each other’s positive characteristics and filled out a list of what they personally like about themselves.
9/25/09 The 4th Graders discussed being Provident Peacemakers. Students participated in an activity which highlighted each child's special gifts, talents, and personality.
9/18/09 The 4th Graders completed surveys regarding bullying. These surveys will be helpful in guiding future anti-bullying topics.
9/11/09 The 4th Grade began the Anti-Bullying Program. *The students: *defined bullying. *discussed that bullying can occur in various forms, hurting a person's body, feelings, or property. *resolved to be Provident Peacemakers.
Snack Time The children may bring a small snack, such as fruit, crackers, pretzels, etc., to be eaten during third period since lunch is not served until 11:55.
Gym/Swim My homeroom (4-2) has Swimming on Tuesdays and Gym on Wednesdays. The children change into gym clothes and swim suits during class time and wear their school uniforms the rest of the day. Swimming begins September 8.
Assignment Book Please check your child’s assignment book each evening. I will no longer be initialing the books. If a problem arises, I can check the books on an individual basis.

GRADE 4 BOOK REPORT DUE NOVEMBER 9, 2009 Dear Parents: To encourage independent reading, the fourth grade class will be writing a book report on one of the books they have read for “Book-It”. The book report format and parent cover letter will be sent home on Monday, October 26. Please sign and have your child return the parent acknowledgement slip by Wednesday, October 28. At that time, they are to tell me the title of the book on which they will be reporting. The book report must include the following information: Setting Characters Favorite Part of the Story Recommendation to a Friend – Why or Why Not? Please have your child complete the sheet, writing in complete sentences in the sections on Setting, Favorite Part and Recommendation. Please make sure they proofread for errors. GRADE 5 SOCIAL STUDIES

CHAPTER 2 TEST DATE: Wednesday, November 18
HOMEWORK: November 12, 2009 – Research paper due
November 16, 2009 – Chapter 2 review questions due . Write 3 questions on note cards from each lesson in Chapter 2. There should be one question per note card. The question is to be written on the front on the card, the answer on the back. We will be using these as part of our review for the test. The note cards will be a homework grade.
WEEKLY OBJECTIVES: The students will be able to: -analyze the effects of the northwest environment on the Tlingit culture Grade 5 Social Studies Project Native Americans of the Due November 12, 2009 You will be researching a Native American tribe of the
Project Directions: Your “fact book” must include the following information: -A cover page with the name of the tribe, a colored picture showing something about the tribe, and your name. Page 1 – Introduction of tribe and their location– Name of tribe and where they live. A map must be included on the page. Page 2 - Type of home – teepee, longhouse, hogan, etc. A picture of the home must be included on the page. Page 3 - Food and how get food source – hunt, farm, deer, corn, buffalo Page 4 - Culture – religion, art, language, etc. Page 5 – Works Cited – what books, websites, journals did you use to complete your research.
-The information on pages one through five must have at least one complete paragraph on each page and be written in complete sentences. Each paragraph must have: -A main idea sentence -A minimum of five detail sentences -A transition/concluding sentence The final copy may be typed or neatly handwritten.
- The information is to be in your own words, not copied directly from the book or website that you are using. - You must have a map of the location and a picture of the type of home. These can be hand-drawn or copied from a book (make sure you list the book on the “Works Cited” page). -You will present your “Fact Book” to the class. Be prepared to discuss your research.
