FIRST GRADE

WEEKLY NEWS AND LESSON PLANS

Week of December 1-5

Theme:  “Christmas Around the World”

CONGRATULATIONS TO DECEMBER’S STUDENT OF THE MONTH – MADISON INMAN

Dear Family,

December will be full of fun activities for our first graders at Sumrall Elementary.  *We are looking forward to our First Grade Reading Day on Wednesday, December 17th.  The students will kick off their shoes, get comfy, and listen to wonderful Christmas stories read by teachers, assistants, and administrators at SES.  *On Thursday, December 18th, we will go Christmas caroling at Ramey’s in Sumrall.  Parents need to arrive at the parking lot at 8:15.  We will sing Christmas carols at 8:30.  Each student needs to wear a red and white Santa hat and a red, white, or green sweatshirt.  Come join us!   *Our Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 19th at 10:00.  We will send a party note home later in the month.  The students will not exchange gifts among other students.  We will be dismissing early that day for the Christmas holidays.  We are looking forward to our “Christmas Around the World” activities in December.

We will read the story “Sam’s Song” pages 71-93 (Book 3) in the basal reader this week.  Please listen to your child read the basal story each night as part of his/her 20 minutes of reading. Don't forget to sign the reading homework chart each night in the homework folder. Study the highlighted basal sight words listed in your child's folder. It would be very helpful if you would make sight word flash cards for your child. As we complete each list of sight words, your child will be orally tested on these words. He/she will not have to spell the words but must be able to recognize them. Sight words are not read by sounds. Your child should know them quickly by sight.  Remember – your child will have the Story Selection Assessment on Thursday, December 4th.  Thanks for your help at home.

Your child will bring home a list of spelling words and sentence dictations on Monday.  Please study these words and sentences daily. When your child receives four consecutive 100’s, he/she can visit our classroom Treasure Chest.

Thank you so much for sending items for our Thanksgiving Feast.  The children enjoyed the feast very much.  We appreciate your help in making our feast a success.

If you ever have any questions concerning your child's progress, please feel free to call the elementary school office (601-758-4289) to schedule a conference. I have specific conference times each day. You can also email me from this website or to my Lamar County School District address at www.teresa.hudson@lamarcountyschools.org.

Thanks for your support at Sumrall Elementary School. Remember our motto: LEARNING TAKES THREE: PARENT, TEACHER, AND ME !

Sincerely,

Teresa Hudson
