Welcome!
I am the Title I Reading Specialist at North Rowan Elementary, where I am beginning my thirteenth year. I work with students to accelerate their learning in the area of reading.

Things are looking bright at NRE.
- We are proud to shout that we met High Growth for the NC ABC's. A big, heartfelt thanks to all of the people who help our children (at home,at school, and in the community). Together we can make a difference inthe lives of our children.
- Mrs. Nancy Killian, 4th grade teacher, has been awarded the 21st Century Model Classroom Grant. She is one of three elementary teachers in the school system to receive this prestigious grant.
- NRE is the recipient of the NCASCD Lighthouse Award. We were one of eight schools in the state, of which only two were elementary schools, to be recognized with this award.

PRESCRIPTIVE INSTRUCTION
You may have heard your child talk about a program that we are using at North Rowan Elementary this year called Prescriptive Instruction (or PI for short). The elementary schools in the Rowan Salisbury School System are fortunate enough to be able to offer the program to our students. Prescriptive Instruction is used to accelerate the learning of our students in reading and math. Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about this program.WHAT IS PRESCRIPTIVE INSTRUCTION?
Prescriptive Instruction is a Web-based, intervention and instruction tool for Reading and Math. It improves reading and mathematic skills by using a proven pedagogy of tutorials, practice exercises, and graded activities that allow students to learn at their own paces and paths. Prescriptive Instruction's curriculum is research-based, and aligned with state and national education standards.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Prescriptive Instruction assesses students with a Diagnostic/Formative Assessment and then automatically determines their skill levels and places them into their own, individualized learning program. Each lesson is designed to ensure that students are actively processing, storing and retrieving information. The comprehensive library of K-5 lessons is designed to ensure mastery of essential skills for Reading, Language Arts, and Math. The curriculum is provided in an engaging, interactive, and high impact learning environment. Students work with real world, relevant examples.
HOW DOES MY CHILD USE IT AT SCHOOL?
All of my Title I students will go to one of three small computer labs, along with other students in their class. During the week, we will be working on Reading three days a week and Math on two days. I will also be working with students in a small group. I will not only utilize the PI recommended activities, but I will also assign specific areas that I feel need to be addressed when necessary.
HOW CAN I USE THIS RESOURCE AT HOME?
One of the great things about this program is that it is web-based, which means that if you have Internet access (for example: at home or the public library), your child can log on to the website and work on the program. The children learned how to do this at school. If you can get them to the web site, they should be able to use it at home as well. I have sent home the information that you may need to help you at home.

AR NEWS
HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD MEET THE AR GOAL?
- Make sure that the book your child is reading is in his/her range to assure that they are the correct level of difficulty. Books that are too hard can be frustrating for your child to read and the questions may be to difficult to read. Books that are too easy do not challenge your child and allow him/her to use the strategies that they are learning to improve their reading comprehension.
- Have your child reread a book with you.
- Please encourage your child to take AR tests on the books that they are reading at home.
- Take your child to the public library to check out books to read.
HOW CAN I TELL IF A BOOK IS AN AR BOOK?
- Books from the media center are marked if they are AR titles.
- Most teachers (including myself) mark their personal books; the students usually know how they are marked.
- The public library branches in Spencer and Salisbury have a list of books that is specific for our school, just ask the librarian for assistance.

The 2008-2009 school year is off to a good start. We are busy assessing the students' needs and getting Prescriptive Instruction up and running. I can tell that the students are ready for a year full of new adventures and learning. I am excited about the year ahead.
