                                  WEEK OF FEBRUARY 1-5

Here is a list of subjects and skills that will be taught in class this week:

THE STUDENTS WILL NOT BE INTRODUCED TO NEW VOCABULARY WORDS OR STORY THIS WEEK.

The students will be tested for Accelerated  Reader.  The purpose of the Accelerated Reader program is to encourage reading and improve reading skills.  More information will follow regarding this program.

STUDENTS WILL RECITE VOCABULARY WORDS AND READ THE STORY FOR A GRADE ON                                     .

Please have your child practice the vocabulary words and read the sentences found  under Words to Remember at the beginning of each story.  After your child reads a particular story orally, please ask the questions under Think and  Respond at the end of each story.

SRA READING:  The students were introduced to SRA.  The Reading Laboratory kit offers 120 short selections that cover a range of topics reflecting students reading preferences.  The selections are divided into ten levels.  Each level is represented by a different color, and each is more difficult to read than the previous level.  Each exercise provides practice in vocabulary building, word pronunciation, reading comprehension, and study skills.  Each child has been placed in a level where he or she can read successfully.  Your child will move through the levels as fast and as far as his or her ability permits.

SPELLING:  The students will pronounce and spell words with     .  Word Building skills will be applied.  Please have your child practice words DAILY.  The words will be found on pp.   (spelling workbook) which will be in your child's "DO" folder on   .   THERE WILL BE NO SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK.       

HERE ARE THE SPELLING WORDS FOR THE WEEK:

 

ENGLISH:  The students will be introduced to the following skills:

Study Skills: Chart- A chart gives information in lists.  Each list has a label.  A chart can have pictures.

Composition: Logical Order/Sequence- Writers may want to tell things in the order that they happen.  The order is sometimes called the sequence.  To tell things in order, writers tell what happens first, next, then, and last.

HANDWRITING:  The keys to Legibility  provide students with a system for learning and assessing their handwriting.  The Keys to Legibility include: SHAPE, SIZE, SPACING, SLANT.  The featured Keys this week are SHAPE and SIZE.

The students will write the days of the week, the months of the year, and a note to a friend focusing on the greeting, message, and closing parts.  

MATH:  The students will identify fact families.  A fact family uses the same numbers to make addition and subtraction sentences.

Example:      4+5=9      9-5=4

                   5+4=9      9-4=5

The students will also create addition and subtraction situations and write the corresponding number sentence.

Vocabulary Power: addition, subtraction, fact family

PLEASE FOCUS ON ROW 4 MATH FACTS THIS WEEK.    STUDENTS WILL RECITE ROW 4 MATH FACTS ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5th  FOR A GRADE.  Students need to RECITE math facts QUICKLY and CORRECTLY.  Please practice at home using counters or a number line.

RELIGION:  The students will learn that Jesus loves us and that he died on the cross and rose to new life for us.

The students will learn:

      *Jesus told his followers that he loved and cared for them

      *Many people gathered to welcome and praise Jesus

      *Jesus taught in the Temple in Jerusalem

      *Jesus died and rose

The Feast of Saint Blase will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 3rd.  The students will be going to Church at 1:30 for the blessing of throats.

SCIENCE:  The students will learn about the five senses and what part of the body you use for each sense. They will also be able to identify living and non-living things.   

REMINDERS:

BOXTOPS- The Winter Contest will run from January 13 through February 19, 2010 so be sure to keep collecting at home.

CAMPBELLS LABELS- Labels will be collected from January through May.

FOLDERS- Papers in "DO" pocket need to be done for homework.  Please place papers in the "DONE" pocket upon completion and return to school the following day.  Papers in the "STAY HOME" folder need to be taken out and left at home.

NOTES AND MONEY- Please place in an envelope marked with your child's name, homeroom number, and what it is for

SCHOOL SUPPLIES- All children are responsible to have in class  several good pencils and erasers.  Please ask your child to bring home his/her pencil box to clean out and organize from time to time.

STUDENT PLANNER- Please check for homework assignments and messages DAILY.

WEEKLY CALENDAR OF SCHOOL EVENTS:

MONDAY:  No Homework Assigned

               Grades K-3 Bingo Game

               Mrs. Boccardi's class will share their games with us

TUESDAY:  Flag Ceremony

                Cards will be made for the military

                Open House, Book Fair, Ice Cream Social-

                6:30-8:30 pm

WEDNESDAY:  Family Feud- All School Game  9:00-11:00 Gym

                     Wear Teacher's Favorite Color Day, with uniform bottoms.  My favorite colors are green, pink, purple, and white.

THURSDAY:  Wear Saint Louise Apparel or just green and white with jeans or sweats

                    Students need to bring in their board game to share with Mrs. Boccardi's class

                   All School Faith Rally  1:30-2:30  Gym

FRIDAY:  All School Liturgy  9:00 am  Church

             Please wear Church uniform

             Early Dismissal  11:30 am

Happy Catholic Schools Week!

In addition to the activities I have highlighted above, please refer to the paper sent home for weekly events.  I look forward to seeing you at the Open House.  The children are very excited.  They have worked very hard in preparing for this "special" evening.  Thank you for sending you child/children to Saint Louise.
