Important News

ü  Welcome once again!  Mrs. Munn, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Casanova, Ms. Broome, Ms. Pickering  and I are going to have a wonderful time this school year!  Thank you for helping your child make a smooth transition to second grade.

ü  Behavior:  Please check your child’s Student Agenda each day for his/her Behavior Mark.  Encourage your child to bring home a color of blue each day.  

ü  Homework:  Homework begins this week.  Please check your child’s homework binder and agenda for specific assignments and messages.

ü  Please check and clean out your child’s keep folder each day. Please leave the vocabulary packet in the keep sleeve all week. Thank you!

ü  Thanks so much to those of you who have donated items to our classroom.  Your kindness is deeply appreciated.

STORY ELEMENTS

SET: Discuss purpose for the story and the story organization;

     require justification of answers *2b1(DOK3) and *2a3(DOK2).

 Introduce the new story;  Henry and Mudge. Predictions; Background information-Pets as Friends. TE pg. 38A. Introduce vocabulary words. Locate story in reading textbook by using Table of Contents. Listen to story on Promethean Board. Discuss the story. Create Vocabulary Packet. TLW use references to determine meanings or pronunciations of words (Obj. 1h, DOK 1). Activity sheet: Identifying parts of book, Vocab. wk. pg. 10R. 

CLOSURE: Review definitions and parts of a book. 

Tuesday

SET: Review vocabulary definitions using workbook pg.

 Read orally pgs. 38-51. Discuss the story with the students. Discuss parts of a book using a graphic organizer on the Promethean board. TLW label concentration cards with the name and definitions of the parts of a book to become familiar with these. AW: Cut and Paste Mudge.

CLOSURE: Review parts of a book.

 

Wednesday

SET: Review what was learned about parts of a book. 

 Review vocabulary. Read pgs. 38-51 orally; Complete comprehension questions, p. 11P. Review characters, setting, and plot using Promethean flipchart. Review use of contents page, wk. pg. 4 and Study Skills pg. 1.

CLOSURE: Review story comprehension and table of contents. 

Thursday

SET: Review story elements, pg. 15P.

    TLW identify parts of a book using a book.  TLW create a mini book labeling parts. 

CLOSURE: Review all weekly skills.

SET: Review vocabulary and skills before test.

 Spelling

 (11:45-12:30)

 Week 2

Monday

SET:  Introduce spelling pattern (Week 2). 

           Students will complete writing spelling words in  

           agenda. Introduce this week’s spelling words. Students

           will develop knowledge of the words (MS Obj. 1e, DOK 1)

           and practice writing words using a pretest-Sheet 1 (MS

           Obj. 4b, DOK 1). Students will write the words legibly.

 

CLOSURE:  Verbally review.

Tuesday

SET:  Review spelling words by creating Spello game sheet.

(DOK 1) 

TLW use words from agenda sheet to randomly place spelling words on Spello sheet.

CLOSURE: Share creations

         

Wednesday

SET: Students will participate in Spello game.

Students will identify spelling words on game and spell orally. TLW work in pairs to complete the Show 

You Know pages. (MS Obj. 4b, DOK 2).

CLOSURE: Review word spelling.

SET: Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names.

  TLW practice capitalizing the days of the week, months of the    year and holidays. Lang. Bk. pgs. 74-75 Extra practice pg. 131. Participate in the interactive writing detective activity.

CLOSURE: Discuss ideas for personal narratives.

Wednesday

SET: Discuss use of proper nouns.

   TLW practice a mixed review of using capital letters, Lang. BK.   pgs. 76-77; Extra Practice pg. 132. TLW use a graphic organizer to plan and write about themselves using capitalization and punctualtion correctly. Promethean Planet flipchart-Personal Story.

CLOSURE: Brainstorm ideas to include in the personal narratives.
