In Science we are currently studying the lithosphere.  We will begin the study by talking about weathering and erosion and the difference in chemical weathering and physical weathering.  Then we will discuss the types of soil we have and what a soil profile is.  We will be able to test some soils from the community to see what levels of nitrogen, potash, and other nutrients the soil contains.  Then we will move on to a study of minerals, gems and rocks.  We will also discuss forces in nature such as earthquakes and volcanoes.  The students will have an opportunity to read either Out of the Dust or Volcano.`

Earlier in 1st quarter, we spent several days learning to write a current event summary.  A rubric on the correct format for this summary is in the front of their green folder.  Behind the rubric is an example of a summary entitled "Death of a Skater".  This example stays in the folder so students can refer to it if necessary.  Each student was also given a Science World magazine to use.  All articles in this magazine are science related.  Students may also use other magazines, the newspaper, or the internet for writing their summary.  However, all current event summaries must be science related.  Students are encouraged to turn in their summaries before the due date, not on the last day the work is due.  The remaining current event summary dates for third quarter are February 10th, February 24th, and March 10th.
