FEBRUARY 2009 Recently all sixth grade students completed research writing on inventors, wind energy or a detailed math word problem. Over the course of two weeks, they did research in the library/computer labs, and wrote rough drafts and final copies of their essays. Finally, they included a works cited page for all their resources. The students have enjoyed learning about WWII and the Holocaust during the month of February. To go along with our studies, we've read the Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and watched the Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. In March, we will cover several non-fiction passages from our reading text as well as begin a study of poetry. Students will continue to build reading skills through practice in our Study Island lab each Thursday. It is important that each student continue their independent reading. Talk to your students about what they are reading and encourage them to read often. This is a great way to improve reading skills/ test scores.
