   Welcome to Shive's Exceptional Children's Department!

        

 

The mission of the EC department is to ensure that all children with disabilities, ages 3 through 21, have available to them a free appropriate public education.  The program emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepares them for further education, employment, and independent living. 



Ethan H. Shive Elementary School is dedicated to being an exemplary school that will be recognized and remembered for its honor, integrity, value, and excellence.

Most Common Special Education Terms:

ADD: a condition where people have hard time paying attention, staying focused, and often has a component of needing to be in perpetual motion. 

ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Any disorder that falls under the category of "autism" from high functioning (often called Asperger's Syndrome) to severe mental retardation along with specific characteristics of noninteraction in the social environment. 

Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP): developed by the IEP team and describes what modifications, positive intervention strategies, and skill instruction will be used in an effort to change the student's behavior. 

Case Manager: An individual who organizes and coordinates services and supports for children with various disabilities. 

Developmental Delay: a condition a person is born with that causes him/her not to develop normally. These students normally have a lower IQ than those born without this condition. 

FBA: Functional Behavior Assessment

IDEA: Individuals with Disability Education Act

Individualized Education Plan (IEP): A written plan developed by a public school team to help an individual child. An IEP includes a statement of the child's present levels of educational performance, measurable annual goals, and outlines specific services that will be offered to help the child meet those goals. 

SLD: Specific Learning Disability

OHI: Other Health Impaired
