Welcome to 2008-2009:
wear your shades, we're gonna shine!

Fifth Graders and Parents:  scroll down to the bottom of this page for directions for accessing the Fifth Grade webpage.  I hope this helps!  Please contact me via email: garciatc@rss.k12.nc.us and let me know if you succeeded or had problems.  Thanks for your patience.  By the way, there are 8 more slots available for singers for the Salisbury Symphony Nutcracker concert see the webpage and check your child's backpack for information.

Please contact me through this page with your questions and comments.  I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Kindergarten

Welcome to your first music classes!  I look forward to singing and playing instruments with you and watching your eyes light up when you learn something new! The first thing we will discover and develop is a steady beat.  That is the part of music that keeps us tapping, clapping and even marching.  (I nod my head when I am supposed to listen quietly but the music makes me want to move. What do you do to keep the beat when it is time to listen quietly?)

Come on in and have some fun!
What all will you have learned
when the year is done?

See you soon,
Tiffany Garcia

First Grade

Well, hello first graders!  I can't wait to see you again!

We will get off to a great start singing and moving to the beat.  Are you ready to stomp your feet?
We will learn more about melody and tempo to start, later this year we will try making music in parts.("What's that?"  Just wait and see!
Making music in parts takes at least two and even three!)

Second Grade

Here's an update on what is going on in our class:
9/3/08

Yesterday a student came in with laryngitis and another student asked what laryngitis is.  I took the time to explain about vocal health.  Our voice is created when air passes from our lungs through our vocal cords.  (These "cords" are actually folds of skin without nerve endings that can bunch up thickly when we shout or stretch out very thinly when a high pitch/note is sung.

When we get laryngitis our vocal folds swell and get coated with a thick mucus.  The best thing to do for laryngitis is to drink warm/hot tea (herbal is best) with ginger, honey and lemon in it.  The ginger reduces swelling, honey soothes and lemon helps dissolve the mucus. The tea itself just tastes good!  It has antioxidants, too.

I hope you find this informative and perhaps even helpful.  There's lots more to come so stay in touch!

This will be an exciting year!  We will begin to unravel the mysteries of reading and writing music.  Simple melodies and rhythm will be the fare of the year.  First we will read 'em, then we will write our own compositions with 'em.

Did you see the opening ceremonies of the Olympics with all the men in concentric circles with no marks on the floor to guide them?  We will do something similar around Thanksgiving.  What shape will we make?  It could be a circle, line or square.  Stay tuned to find out!

Third Grade
Watch us as we grow!  We will add some new notes to the few we have, enough to make a pentascale.  (What is that?) Also, we will continue to study how rhythm relates to the steady beat.  We will move to the music as we begin to explore dynamics, texture and tempo.  We will get to play instruments, too!  Hey, what about playing instruments with our own composition?

Fourth Grade
Well, I guess everyone is relieved that we will have smaller classes next week!  For our year in music, we will again compose our own song using a pentascale, but we will add details like meter signatures and key signatures.  Mrs. Gobble told me that January or February would be a good time to get in the computer lab to create accompaniments/orchestrations for your new songs.  I will work out the details over the next few weeks.

I hope your IPA is not too rusty, we will begin using this again very soon.  Lots of new music and instruments to use.  Keep looking for new info.  See you in smaller classes!
