Are You a Brainiac? We are off to a great start to our Brainiacs unit. Students have learned the major parts of the brain and the function of each, how neurons work, and investigated which side of their brain is dominant. Did you know that we have about 100 billion brain cells and we start to lose thousands of brain cells after the age of 20? No wonder I can’t remember where I put my cell phone. During this next month, students will experiment with reaction time, create optical illusions, and learn how to keep their brain safe with a special egg drop activity. Students will be bringing home the “thinking cap“ they created to represent their “smarts”. Please ask your child to explain his/her cap. What smarts do you have in common with your child? Save the Date: October 29th Wood Magic Science Fair Not all field trips require travel. On Thursday, October 29th the field trip is coming to us at the Oak Grove Gifted Center. Mississippi State University Forestry Department will be presented the Wood Magic Science Fair to all third grade EXCEL students. Please save the date as we will need plenty of parent volunteers. More information will be sent home in the coming month. Students will examine the form of an object, its shape and parts, to determine the effect it has on the way in which the object functions or operates within our world. The interconnection between form and function will be related to:
