Ben Franklin:

A Man of Many Talents

"If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing." ~ B. Franklin

America has never forgotten Benjamin Franklin because he did both.  He lived these words of wisdom by writing as much as he possibly could and by doing even more.  He became famous for being a scientist, an inventor, a statesman, a printer, a philosopher, a musician, and an economist.  This nine weeks we will study his fascinating life and the influence it still has on our world.  We will read primary source documents, periodicals, and the book Who was Ben Franklin to learn about Franklin as a scientist, inventor, and patriot.  Hands on activities and selected websites will help students delve into what made Franklin a man of many talents.

Economics Makes Cents

Economics Makes Cents is a unit that infuses economics into our EXCEL curriculum.  This nine weeks, students will be introduced to economic concepts through a selection of children's literature.  They will begin earning Bright Bucks, our classroom currency.  Bright Bucks are earned for fulfilling the duties of their classroom job and daily classroom routines.  Bright Bucks will be used to purchase materials needed to produce goods for our markets.

Our Big Idea

Throughout this year, the focus of our units will be on form and function.  Students will examine the form of an object, its shape and parts, to determine the effect it has on the way in which the object functions or operates within our world.  The interconnection between form and function will be related to:

  • the individual student
  • the world around us
  • inventors and innovators who have changed our world
  • the student's ability to affect our world through creative problem solving

The Lamar County School District is committed to the motivation and guidance of gifted students through enriched, quality education based on the identification of their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. To fulfill this commitment, the gifted education program is dedicated to utilizing teaching strategies that broaden the students  scope of knowledge while providing independent study skills that will enable them to become life-long learners.

The EXCEL program strives to develop within the gifted student, a desire for excellence and a sense of individual responsibility to self and society though a program of experiences designed with special instructional approaches and alternatives to regular academic classroom instruction.
