Knox Middle School: A 21st Century Leadership School

“Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders, Today”

Trojans LEAD:Learning, Engaging, Achieving, Developing

March 25, 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Spring has sprung. This is the time that we begin our final stage to ensure students are prepared for the EOGs. It is also a time that can be distracting to students. Because of this, we encourage you to speak with your children about making sure they stay focused on doing well in school, both academically and behaviorally.

Technology Update

We submitted a grant request to the Blanche and Julian Robertson Foundation this past week. If approved, the funds from this grant will allow us to fulfill our goal of becoming a 21st Century School one year earlier than planned.

Gym Remodeling

The gym remodeling is progressing very well. For a few weeks, we will not be able to use the gym, but we developed a plan to accommodate our students’ PE instruction. We are using the auditorium for some activities, the weight room is still available, and with the improved weather, most of our PE classes can be conducted outside.

The construction team will continue removing the windows on the weekends of March 26, and April 2. Because of the equipment that will be on school grounds during this time, our gym and outside PE fields, incl. the football field, will be off-limits.

PTA

The PTA Nominating Committee is seeking parents who can serve either as an
officer (President and Vice-President are open) or on a committee. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Krista Woolly at (704) 603-8782.

Cheers for…

…the 7th Grade Boys’ Basketball Team for winning the Middle School Conference Tournament. Our boys’ team finished as both regular season and tournament champions with a 17-0 record.

…Mr. Michael Robinson. Mr. Robinson is an 8th grade social studies teacher and one of our coaches. He organized the Winter Sports Pep Rally that we held last Friday, March 18. It was great rally, during which our student-athletes and coaches were recognized. We also enjoyed a great student-faculty basketball game.

Yearbooks

The 2010 – 2011 yearbooks are currently for sale. The cost is $24.00 for a soft cover and $30.00 for a hardcover. Additional upgrades are available. You may pick-up an order form at the front desk.

Volunteers Needed

Ms. Morgan, our Counseling Department Chair, is requesting volunteers to proctor during EOG testing. The dates are:

May 12- 8th grade Science EOG

May 17-19- School-wide Reading and Math EOGs

May 31-June 3- EOG Retests

The time for these tests is typically 8:00 AM until about noon. If you are able to assist, please contact our counselor’s office at 704-633-2922, ext. 823.

Athletics

Our spring sports are off to a good start. The tennis team is currently undefeated, while the soccer, the track and baseball teams are performing very well. Also, our athletics director, Mrs. Mitchell, is seeking tennis racquets. If anyone is able to donate a racquet, please contact either Coach Mitchell or Coach Beaver (tennis coach) at 704-633-2922.

Pastries with the Principal

The next Pastries with Principal will be held on March 30 at 9:00 AM in the cafeteria.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Thank you for your continuing support of Knox Middle School

Have a Great Weekend,

Rodney Burton
