Parents- I will use this page to inform you of important information such as class projects, scheduling conferences, and any other concerns or issues this year.We have obtain our passports and we are on our way to explore a world of learning and success. Below, you will find out what we are learning and doing in each subject.
What Are We Learning?
Reading- We are currently working on our Poetry Unit. Please make sure that your child studies the poetry vocabulary words.
Grammar/Writing- Writing and creating compound sentences.
Writing- In writing, we are continuing to learn about the writing process and narrative writing. We have moved to learning about Expository writing and how to write to different types of Expository prompts.
Spelling- Parents, please remember to help your child study the words on their High Frequency Wordlist.
Poetry Vocabulary Words: poem, poet, rhyme, rhythm, line, stanza, metaphor.simile, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, imagery
Math- We are starting Ch. 15 on Algebra-Solving and Writing Equations and Inequalities. Parents, please look forward to your Parent Newsletter and activities that you can use to help your child succeed and gain a better understanding of the concepts that are being taught in the classroom. Remember, math journals are to be signed and return the next day.
Afterschool Tutoring are held on Thursday from 2:15-3:05.
Social Studies- We are in the middle of changing topics. Please come back for the update.
Current Event Articles are do every Friday. Please make sure that your child is following the outline that was given to them.
Science- We are currently studying Ecosystems and will gradually move into land biomes. Parents, look forward to an upcoming project on Ecosystem.
D.A.R.E.- We have started our D.A.R.E. program and we have welcomed our DARE officer to our class. Our DARE officer is Officer Cooper and she has work with Overton as the D.A.R.E. officer for the past four years. During this block, your child has the opportunity to learn about harmful drugs and how to say "No" to peer pressure and drugs.

Parents- If you missed your scheduled PEP conference, please let me know when you are available by sending me an email or a note in your child's agenda.
Parents, please rememeber to sign your child's agenda nightly. This is one of my ways of communicating with you on a daily basis.
Parental Involvement is always appreciated.
How Can you Help? Below you will find some activities that youcan do with your child.
Word of the Week: Have your child explain or write a one-page paper about their day utilizing one powerful word numerous times.
Lunch Box Words: Place a powerful word and other notes in with your child's lunch or agenda.
Dinner Discussions: Encourage your child to use the powerful words at dinner to analyze their day.
Parent-Student Games: Develop a "who wants to be a millionaire" type fun game, or come up with your own!
TV/Video Connection: Have your child discuss a program when it ends by having your child answer questions you ask that include the 12 powerful words.
Most importantly: Remember, together WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
