Dear families, I am happy to report as of Friday afternoon the Baril's had power! I hope everyone weathered the storm well with little to no damage. Thankfully October has passed and we are now in the month of November. This will be a busy month with Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, and the half day for conferences. Please be advised conferences are still on. Conference times will go out on Monday, November 7th. Afternoon conferences are 1-3 on Tuesday, November 8th. Our night conferences will take place Wednesday, November 9th from 7-8:30. I look forward to meeting with all families.
HALLOWEEN CRAFT CENTERS Our Halloween party and morning craft centers were a huge success! A spooktacular time was had by all. I thank all families for helping make the day so special. It was definitely a memorable day for the class. We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of parents willing to volunteer their time in our class!
We will have more craft centers to celebrate Thanksgiving. This event will be Monday, November 21st. The centers will start at 9:00 and end around 11:00. Craft centers are always a great time. Remember, the crafts are already designed and ready to go. Volunteers help facilitate directions and help with a little gluing, cutting, and/or counting. No hands are ever turned away! More information will be passed along as the date gets closer.
READING The class is still participating in guided reading groups. They love this time of day and are working hard to develop their reading abilities. This month we will focus on the following:
Phonics Grammar Long i: igh, i, y, or ie Nouns r-Controlled Vowels: er, ir, ur Proper Nouns Long o: o, oa, ow, oe Singular and Plural Nouns Words with ce, ge, se Irregular Plural Nouns
Comprehension Word Study Steps in a Process Plurals -s, -es Compare/Contrast Compound Words Drawing Conclusions Singular and Plural Possessives Graphic Sources WRITING The children in B302 continue to impress me with their writing. They write in a journal 3-5 times a week. Some of the topics are assigned and other topics are free choice. The students are working on writing a least five connected thoughts about the topic of the day. They are also working on using capital letters to begin their sentences and end marks to end them. They are also working on editing their writing for mistakes. I ask them to edit at least three mistakes in their writing. I love it when I see the children using adjectives in their writing. They can come up with some pretty detailed sentences when they put their mind to it. Our focus this month will be on descriptive writing. I am excited to see how well they do as they work on their first descriptive paragraph. EVERYDAY MATH We are finishing up Unit 2 of our Everyday Math program. We will start Unit 3 soon. The focus of Unit 3 is place value, money, and time. The students will:
-read, write, and compare numbers from 0-999 -review place value, or the meaning of each digit in a number -review money concepts, including finding the value of coins, identify different coin combinations for the same amount, and making change -read and record time using the hour and minute hands on an analog clock LUNCH MONEY/NOTES To help sort the many items the children bring to school, I ask that all notes and lunch money be sent in a sealed envelope with the name of the student, my name (Mrs. Baril), and the contents written on the front. This is especially important when the children bring in money or important notes I need to read before the school day begins. ***If sending in lunch/milk money, please try to send in the exact amount or you may write a check payable to Burgess School Lunch. RECESS We will go out for recess as much as possible during the summer and winter months. It is important that the children be dressed appropriately. When the weather gets colder the children may play in the snow if they bring their snow pants, boots and warm gloves. These items can be brought to school in a different bag, or they can be worn to school. Kids enjoy building snowmen and/or just being in the snow! SPECIALS IN B302 Our specials follow a 6 day rotation. If there is a half day, please follow the schedule as if we had our special. If there is a snow day we do not miss specials. That special moves to the next school day. Day 1 North Gym Day 2 Health Day 3 Music Day 4 South Gym Day 5 Library/Computer Day 6 Art LUNCH/MILK We will use a new system for hot lunch this year. More information about this process will be forwarded to you soon. If you ever have questions about our lunch program, I encourage you to ask the experts and contact the kitchen directly. We will have snack every morning around 10:00. The school does not provide snacks, but snack milk can be purchased for $0.50. The kids enjoy this time as it is a bit of a break! Hot Lunch $2.50 Snack/Lunch Milk $0.50 OTHER HELPFUL TIPS It is a good idea to leave a sweater/sweatshirt at school as the temperature in the building does like to change on us! I also encourage children to bring in water bottles. They may keep them at their seats and hydrate as necessary. It may also be helpful to write the student's name on the bottle. RECESS TOYS The second grade team has decided that the children are allowed to bring in small toys, balls, or stuffed animals to play with during recess. These toys will stay in their backpacks until recess. However, we ask that electronic toys stay safe at home. Children get very upset when special treasures get lost or damaged:( BIRTHDAYS ***If you are interested in having your child pass out invitations in school for a birthday party, it is helpful to give one to either everyone in the class, all of the girls, or all of the boys. I understand that some children like to celebrate with just a few friends. I ask that these invitations be sent outside of school. This helps eliminate hurt feelings. Thank you for your cooperation! **WISH LIST AT ANY TIME DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR** -Cube Tissue Boxes Many thanks in advance! Mrs. Baril
