1. percent – a ratio comparing a number to 100
2. discount – the amount by which the original price is reduced
3. tip – the amount of money added to a bill for service; usually a percent of the bill
4. sales tax – a percent of the cost of an item
5. decimal system – the most commonly used number system, in which whole numbers and fractions are represented using base ten
6. place value – the value given to a place a digit may occupy in a numeral
7. repeating decimal – a decimal in which one or more digits repeat infinitely
8. terminating decimal – a decimal number that ends or terminates
9. average – the sum of the items in a set of data divided by the number of items in the set
10. ratio – a comparison of two quantities by division
11. proportion – an equation that states that two ratios are equivalent
12. front-end estimation – when you use only the whole number part of a decimal to estimate
13. clustering – round all numbers to the same value to estimate
14. divisor – the number that you are dividing by in a division problem
15. dividend – the number that is being divided in a division problem
16. quotient – the result of answer when one number is divided by another number
VOCABULARY LIST FOR INTEGERS AND SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
1. postitive numbers - numbers greater than zero
2. negative numbers - numbers less than zero
3. opposites - numbers that are the same distance from zero but are on different sides of the number line
4. integers - the set of all whole numbers and their opposites
5. absolute value - an integer's distance from zero on a number line
6. exponential functions - expressed in the form of y=ax
7. exponent - the number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor
8. power - a number produced by raising a base to an exponent
9. scientific notation - a method of writing very large or very small numbers by using powers of 10
