WELCOME TO MRS. STANLEY'S 4th GRADE Important Information As the second quarter comes to an end, please make sure you sign up for a conference time. To schedule a conference please be sure to contact me through your student's agenda or call (704)639-3009. Test Taking Strategies Larry Bell has introduced the school system to a few new test taking strategies that are being implemented at Isenberg. Please discuss with your student the 12 Powerful Words as well as the UNRAAVEL strategies to help students solve math word problems and reading passages with the accompanying questions. The Twelve Powerful Words Trace Analyze Infer Evaluate Formulate Describe Support Explain Summarize Compare Contrast Predict Reading UNRAAVEL Underline the title Now predict the passage (write down on your paper what your story's about) Run through the paragraphs (number them one by one) Are you reading the questions? Are the important words circled? (look at them closely and write down what they mean) Venture through the passage (read it so carefully, if you think you see an answer, make it stand out) Eliminate the wrong answers Let the correct answer be found (write down where you found it and how you know it's right) Homework Your child will have certain homework assignments weekly. These are as follows: Spelling. Your child has weekly spelling homework. Spelling words will be copied down weekly in their agenda. The direction sheet should be in their 3-ring binder. Please also see spelling directions on the bottom of this page. They will choose three activities to complete and turn in each Friday. Writing. Your child will complete three one-paragraph writing entries each week. These should be written in their writing homework notebook. This will also be turned in Friday morning. Reading. Your child is responsible for reading at least thirty minutes nightly. Students may choose to read library books, books checked out from the classroom, or even their textbooks. The title of the book should be written in their agenda and an adult should sign each day to show that this assignment has been completed. Students should be practicing multiplication facts and high frequency words DAILY! This is very important for your child to succeed in 4th grade.
Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday (subject to change!)
