Monday:  In-class reading: "American History" by Judith Ortiz Cofer; class discussion over topics/themes in story.

Tuesday:  Review aloud questions 1-5, on page 163. Write a response to the following questions:

• Liteary Elements #1: In your opinion, what makes Elena the main character? Use information from your story to support your answer.
• Evaluate and Connect #14: A character trait, is a habit, physical attribute, or an attitude that helps to define a character. Why might Ortiz Cofer have given Eugene's mother the character trait of a tiny, sweet-sounding voice?

Wednesday:  In-class reading: Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace;" pre-reading journal entry (from page 168): brainstorm a variety of circumstances under which people may decide not to tell the truth. What are the likely consequences of each case of dishonesty? Do any of the circumstances justify, or excuse, hiding the truth?

Thursday:    Review questions from "The Necklace," p 176, 1-5. Complete the Personal Writing activity on page 177: Neither a Borrower nor a Lender Be.

• Write about a time when you or someone you know got into trouble by lending or borrowing something. Describe what happened and explain what you learned from the experience. How was that experience similar to or different from that of Madam Loisel?

Friday:  Selection quiz: Open-book, selected response quizzes over the following selections: "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "American History," and "The Necklace."
