Science Rules!!!!!! 8C, known as Team Wake Forest (a university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina), is studying Biology and the beginning of life as a cell. Students should keep ALL cell papers that will be considered a Notebook for this unit and will be checked. For some students this will be easy to improve their grades since this is a classwork grade. Each student will get a table of contents from me. We are numbering the pages in class. Then a title page should be designed with a cell picture (s), name of student, date and period. For review, if a student would like to revisit some of the short videos I have shown in class, I am most happy to offer them. Teachers Domain is a resource sponsored by Public television. If students decide to create their own accounts, they do not need to give out any personal information. They need to record Illing Middle School. If students would like to log on as me; my username is vschneid and my password is ginsci6. My videos are grouped in folders. Right now we are using my cell folder. The cell cycle and the cell organelles are in this folder.
There are great websites to use at the Science Portal located through the Illing Media Center. Go to the Illing Home Page and look for Media Center. Click on that. The Illing Science Portal is for all students and created by the teachers at Illing. Please consider using the websites that are listed on this page to help you understand the the cell, mitosis, meoisis, DNA, genes and heredity. There are MANY great places to look for information and these sites have all been vetted for students. They are appropriate for the age of Illing middle school students. There are games and animations that will be assigned from time to time on line through this page. Here are a few GREAT limericks about friciton that were submitted by different students on team:
There once was a boy name Tam
He loved sliding while eating ham
When he slid on a slide
Sliding friction was on his side
Then he ate a jar of strawberry jam. Shakeem W.
There once was a man named Tom. He threw a snowball at his mom. But he slipped on black ice And it wasn't real nice
When he shattered the bones in his palm. Gabby Ferrell There once was a guy named Bear
Who had slipped on an old creaky stair.
He had no traction. It was a chain reaction. Simple Friction would have prevented his scare. Austin Herbst There once was a boy named Dan
People say he could run like a ram.
He tried to pull scams He learned friction; practiced with a man They recorded skateboarding with a can and ate ham. Issac Campos There once was a boy name Tim.
He happened to be very slim. When friction didn't get a grip, He was forced to trip. And now he needs help from Jim. Konstandina Hatzikonstantis There once was a boy name Trip.
His shoes really had no grip. Little did he know That friction made him go So he fell right on his hip. Kate Kolodziej There once was a boy name Bill.
He had a very large grill. It wouldn't move, because it was huge. It had static friction by will. Max Maggiore There once was a man name Stan. He liked to drive his van. He rolled on the ground And friction was around So he never hit a man. Anthony Hamilton There once was a girl named MaryClaire.
Everyone was starting to stare. She went slipping and sliding 'Cause the friction was hiding. All messed up and jumbled was her hair. Skylar Thompson and MaryClaire Cameau PLEASE CHECK the calendar. It has assignments and dates when work is due. Just scroll down a bit to read the directions when you click on the date. If you would like to contact me, student or guardian, please feel free to use this website. Any questions? I am your child's advocate and I am available for any extra help when needed. Make sure you complete your homework and keep your text home (it will come home on Friday, Sept. 2) and available for reference and reading assignments. Doing your homework is one way to be successful as we navigate through the year! Due to the many changes in days, students need to see what they need to turn in. Maybe you have it in your folders. CHECK!!!!And I will give out student scorecards for each student periodically.
Anyone interested in joining the Science Club is welcome. Come fill out a membership form and then come when you can.
