Welcome to Mrs. Toma's school notes page for 8th grade Language Arts at Holly Ridge Middle School. On this site I will post homework and upcoming information that will be necessary for you. Please make note of it and email me with any questions - ktoma@wcpss.net.

Today all 8th graders will participate in a writing assignment that helps begin to gear their writing towards high school success and the 10th grade writing test.  Students who have not successfully passed the 7th grade writing test will have the opportunity to take it this day.  We will complete these writing assessments during the first two hours of the day (7:30 - 9:30am).  We will adjust the bell schedule after this to ensure that students attend all their classes.  Please email me if you have any questions.

Mon Feb 16

We will go over Study Guide for Act I of Anne Frank and finish reading Act I.  I will give student the vocab words for Act II of Anne Frank. We will begin Act II.  Homework:  Write each of the vocab word in a sentence using context clues.

 

Tues Feb 17

We will attend the Scholastic Book Fair.  Several books, posters, magazines will be on sale for students to purchase.  Proceeds go to our media center.  Students may preview materials when we go and go back on their own time during the rest of the week if they want to purchase something. They can also bring money with them on Tuesday to purchase on the spot.

We will check homework and I will distribute and discuss the ESCAPE BAG partner project that will be due on Feb. 27.

Homework:  Choose (5) vocab words and come up with a synonym for each; begin planning Escape Bag.

Wed Feb. 18

We went over the homework from last Thursday on analogies.  Students continued to take notes on WW II and the Holocaust.  I gave out Holocaust vocab terms; we highlighted important information in class.  Homework:  Make flashcards of the Holocaust terms.

Tues Feb 3

We read in our textbooks background information on the Holocaust and Diary of Anne Frank.  Students completed questions in class.  Homework:  Nazi Germany worksheet; write sentences with vocab words for Act I of Diary of Anne Frank.

We began reading Anne Frank out loud in class today. Homework:  Final Solution worksheet and Study guide questions for Anne Frank.

TUES JAN 27 - Introduction to World War II, Holocaust in preparation for a cultural arts presentation tomorrow; Students also completed prewriting for a poem "I Am Now."  Prewriting and final draft of the poem are due on Thurs. Jan 29.  Students also had a homework worksheet (Blocks 3,4,5 only). 

WED JAN 28

Today we had a lock down drill and went to a cultural arts program entitled "Let the Children Tell" performed by a professional drama company.  Students have homework:  I Am Now poem - prewriting and final draft due tomorrow.  Also, they are to complete questions based on the play they saw today.

We took notes on World War II and the Holocaust today.

Today we examined and analyzed two speeches, "I Have a Dream" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and JFKennedy's Inauguration Speech.  No homework

FRIDAY JAN 23

Today we analyzed JFKennedy's Inauguration Speech (continuation from yesterday) and we looked at NC Governor Bev Perdue's Inauguration Speech.  We will continue this on Tuesday.

 

TUES JAN 20

Students:  Since schools are closed due to the weather, I encourage you to watch the presidential inauguration speech at home today (it will begin at noon on major TV stations).  We will be examining the text of the speech in class on Wednesday - but it will be helpful if you can watch it today.  Look for the literary elements we discussed last week:  repetition, metaphors, underlying assumptions/beliefs, and word choice.  After you have listened to the speech, evaluate whether you feel it was a good speech, based on its use of these literary elements.  This week we will be looking at famous speeches in history and evaluating them for use of these elements.  (speeches of JFK, MLKing, Bev Perdue, Abe Lincoln and Obama)

Attention Parents:  On Tuesday, Jan 20th, all 8th grade students will have an oppotunity to view President-elect Obama's inauguration speech.  This fits in well with the 8th grade Language Arts non-fiction unit as well as the Social Studies curriculum.

MON JAN 12

Analyzing a writer's purpose:  Susan B. Anthony's speech on Women's Suffrage.  We read this and analyzed the speech.  Homework:  Focus Lesson 61 - Determining an Author's Purpose.  Book Reports were due TODAY!  A few students said they had computer issues and did not turn it in.  In order to accept any late work, I must have a signed note from a parent explaining a reason for the late paper

TUES JAN 13

Analyzing a writer's purpose and looking at underlying assumptions.  We will read "A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King" by Alice Walker.  Homework:  Worksheet on Underlying Assumptions.

WED JAN 14

We will read "An American Dream" by Martin Luther King and analyze it for purpose, tone and mood.  Homework:  Practice Assessment for Blue Diamond

THURSDAY JAN 15

We will read Dr. ML King's speech, "I Have a Dream" and analyze it as a persuasive speech.  We will also watch a video of Dr. King's actual speech in Washington.  Homework:  NO HOMEWORK FOR TODAY!!!

FRIDAY JAN 16

We will review the practice assessment from Wed's homework and take the Blue Diamond #6 for Quarter 2.

Reading of non-fiction this week.  Today we looked at newspapers, historical documents and essays. 

Students were given December Word Part Project - due on Friday Dec 19.  Please look at this assignment with your child.  They have 3 weeks to complete it!

Due Friday:  Outside reading log and a summary of the book they read.  More specific info to come on Friday.

TUES DEC 2

Today we talked about summary and predictions.  We read the non-fiction article from their literature books - Lots in Space - and a handout entitled "The Road from Coorain."  Students completed questions on these.  Homework:  Reading log and Word Parts Project.  Also, they need to finish the questions from "Road to Coorain."

WED DEC 3

Today we worked on selective underlining and summarizing information.  I handed out the assignment sheet for the summary of the book for outside reading.  Homework:  Continue reading log and work on summary - due Friday.

We read an essay entitled "When Does Education Stop?"  by James Michener.  We practiced reading strategies for summarizing information.  Students also need to complete questions on this essay for homework tonight.

Socratic Seminar:  When Does Education Stop?

Sub today - Mrs. Toma will be attending a workshop.  Students are to turn in their summaries and reading logs.  They completed grammar work on conjunctions in their Writing and Grammar books - p. 380-387 along with work on reading strategies for different genres.  Homework:  Conjunctions Worksheets - due Monday.

Today we reviewed for our test tomorrow on The Weirdo.  I gave students time to work on the review packet in class and then we went over it in class.  This review packet counts as a test grade.  They need to bring it to class tomorrow.

Homework:  Study for test on Weirdo!  Also, I will check journals tomorrow, and look over reading logs (these logs will be due on Friday, Dec. 5 - total of 10 days of documented outsided reading).    In addition, I will take up the Review Sheets for the Weirdo.

Today we finished reading The Weirdo today in class.  We went over comprehension questions from Book 4.  I also handed out a review sheet in preparation for the Unit Test on the novel that will be on Tuesday.  I told students they could begin working on the review sheet on their own over the weekend - but we will also do it together in class on Monday.

Students should continue reading their library book and filling in the reading log.  This reading is due on December 5.

Blocks 2,4,5 - We read The Weirdo up to page 199.  Tomorrow we will finish the novel in class!  Homework:  Answer questions on worksheet for Book 4 of The Weirdo - #'s 1-6 and 8 only.  Answers should be on another sheet of paper and all answers should be in complete sentences.  Also, students should be reading their libary book for 30 minutes and completing the reading log.

WEDNESDAY NOV 19

Today we reviewed the plot of The Weirdo up to this point.  Students turned in their summaries from Book 4.  We then read aloud.  No homework on The Weirdo for tonight.

Students should be reading their book for outside reading and completing their reading log. 

CHANGE TO BLOCK 3 TEST DATE:  Weirdo test will be on TUESDAY NOV 25.  In fact, ALL classes will have their test that day on The Weirdo.


TUESDAY NOV 18

Today we went to the library and students chose a book of their choice for outside reading.  I gave them a reading log.  Outside reading books must be completed by Friday, December 5.

We continued reading The Weirdo and summarizing what we read.  Blocks 2,4,and 5 finished 133-154 (sticky notes and then a summary) and then started work on pages 154-162 (they must take notes and then write a summary).  This must be completed by tomorrow.  Students who needed to finish were able to check out books today.

Block 3 - they finished reading pp 169-195 (sticky notes and then a summary) and then read pp 195-205 (take notes and write summary).  Students must have this done by tomorrow.

Change in Test date for The Weirdo - ALL classes will have their test on Tuesday, November 25.  We will review on Friday and Monday for the test.


MONDAY NOV 17
Today we attempted a difficult exercise!  I noticed that the students were not comprehending the Weirdo to the expectations that I would like.  Last week's quiz on Book 3 were not to my liking - so this week, in our last book of The Weirdo, we are spending time in class reading the book silently and SUMMARIZING what we read.  I gave the students Post-It Notes and told them to complete one note per section of reading.  They were expected to read 20 pages in class today and then take the Post-It Notes home tonight and write a summary using their "notes."   We will do this again tomorrow.

Looking ahead:  Block 3 - The Weirdo test will be on THURSDAY this week.
Blocks 2,4, and 5 - The Weirdo Test will be next TUESDAY NOV 25.

Today we are going on a field trip to see a Boston Theatre Group at Memorial Auditorium perform 5 short plays.  We will leave school about 9:30 and return by 1:15.  Students who have paid their fee and have brought signed permission slips will attend.  STUDENTS MUST BRING A BAG LUNCH FROM HOME (if they did not make prior arrangements for a school bag lunch). 
Students not going on the field trip will be with Ms. Romiti for the day.  They will be provided alternate assignments in each of the core subjects.

Today we have a shortened schedule due to the administration of the NC Writing Test for those students who did not pass last year or who are new to Wake County.

In class we went over the homework from last night (Vocab Book 2 - Weirdo).

Students then read Weirdo silently:

Block 2:  Should finish up through page 60; Block 3 - up to pg 85; Blocks 4,5 - up to page 71.

If needed, students can come at the end of the day and check out a Weirdo book to catch up on the reading.

Today we took a vocab/spelling test on Book 1 of The Weirdo.  Students then continued to read silently the novel in class.

Today we continued reading The Weirdo.  We went over the vocab for Book 1 of Weirdo.  QUIZ tomorrow - on spelling AND definitions.  Also, if students have not finished the study guide for Book 1 of Weirdo, they should do that.

Students who are taking the Writing Test re-take on Thursday should turn in their practice drafts to me tomorrow.

Those students working on the enrichment newspaper project - your final copies are due during Tiger Time on Friday.

Today we took our 3rd Blue Diamond for the quarter.  Then we picked up reading The Weirdo where we left off on Friday. 

Homework for Blocks 2,4,5:  Continue to work on study guide for Book 1 of The Weirdo.  Students should complete as many questions as they can based on how far in the book they are.

I have a sub today.  Students will read pages 4-24 of the Weirdo in class silently and answer the study guide questions that go with those pages.  They are also expected to finish their sentences of vocab if they were not completed for homework.  They should turn in questions and sentences at the end of class. Any misbehavior reported by the sub will be an automatic referral - no questions asked.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 23

Today we took a sample quiz using EOG type questions in preparation for our next Blue Diamond test next week.  We then went over the vocabulary words for The Weirdo and read the first few pages of the novel in class.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22

Today we talked about reading strategies when reading nonfiction.  Then we took a pre-reading look at our new novel, The Weirdo.  I handed out Vocab for Book 1 of the novel.  Students are to define each word for homework.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 21

Wow!  We accomplished a lot today!  I collected the final drafts of the memoirs that students wrote - along with their rough drafts, peer editing and prewriting activities.

In class we discussed how to find meaning in words you don't know - and we looked at structural analysis (breaking words into their parts), context clues, dictionaries and glossaries.  We also looked at a thesaurus and worked on looking up words and finding synonyms that would improve writing.


Homework:  Outside reading project on nonfiction book due tomorrow along with reading log for the book.  Don't forget to return your book to the library!

MONDAY OCTOBER 20

Today we took a quiz on NOUNS.

Students completed a worksheet on Context Clues and need to finish it for homework if they did not do so in class.

They continued with their peer conferences of the MEMOIR they are writing - final draft DUE TOMORROW.


FRIDAY OCTOBER 17

Today we went over the NOUN packet distributed on Tuesday in preparation for our quiz on Nouns on Monday.  Students should know the difference between common and proper nouns and collective and compound nouns.

We also did peer editing of our memoir that is due on Tuesday.

Today students had peer editing of their rough drafts.  I modeled peer editing after reading a student's rough draft and then students had one of their peers read and work on peer editing.

Today we continued our work on memoirs; we read an excerpt from John Steinbeck's memoir, "Travels with Charley" so students could see an example as modeling for their own writing tomorrow.

We also did some grammar exercises on NOUNS.

HOMEWORK:  Read non-fiction book for outside reading; begin planning project - due October 22.  Also, complete pages 1 and 2 of noun exercises.

MONDAY OCTOBER 13

Today we began a writing assignment that will take this entire week to complete.  We brainstormed about events in our lives and talked about the characteristics of a MEMOIR.  I gave students an example of an event in my own life that could go into my personal memoir.  Students then brainstormed several events from their lives and then focused on one in particular for further writing.

Students also finished a pretest on nouns.

HOMEWORK:  Finish graphic organizer for prewriting on a memoir.  Read outside reading non-fiction book for 30 minutes.


THURSDAY OCTOBER 9

Today students took a blue diamond assessment (#2 of 3 for 1st quarter on reading) and then we went over the answers.  Students also began a pretest on nouns in preparation for our study of the nouns and pronouns next week.

Homework:  Begin reading non-fiction book for outside reading.  Book project on this outside reading is due on October 22 along with the reading log for the entire reading period.


WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8

Today in class we finished up our study of myths by completing study questions of a Native American myth.  Then the students took a practice Blue Diamond assessment in preparation for our second Blue Diamond that will be tomorrow.  (Blue Diamond is a reading assessment given 3 times/quarter - a common WCPSS assessment for all 8th grade LA students). 

Homework:  Reading for outside reading.  Students received new reading logs and a list of projects that they can choose from for their new book - a non-fiction book.  Books must be read and projects completed by WED. OCTOBER 22.


TUESDAY OCTOBER 7

Today we continued with our study of Native American myths and worked on study questions from the myth we read yesterday in class.  We also went over homework and students turned in their reading logs.

We went to the library to check out a book for outside reading.  Students are required to read a NON-FICTION book for outside reading this time.  More information about reading logs and projects will come shortly.

MONDAY OCTOBER 6

Today we finished our overview of poetry as a literary genre.  We also began a brief overview of myths - looking at the Greek myth, "Midas."  We made predictions about myths and I targeted student prior knowledge by filling out a KWL chart - "what we KNOW, what we WANT to know, and tomorrow - what we LEARNED."

Today I checked journals and we looked at poetry - another form of literary genre.  We looked at the poem "January" by John Updike and examined it for different figurative language, rhyme, rhythm and theme.

Today we finished up our examination of the play "One Day's Beginnings" and students turned in their work they had been doing this week.  Also, I gave the students their Blue Diamond scores back and we looked at each question to see where they made mistakes.  We set class goals for the next assessment, which will be next Thursday.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1

Today we had a HARD lesson - but the students really seemed to work hard and understand.  We worked on analyzing the LANGUAGE in the play we were reading and we filled out a 3 x 3 grid that looked at character, plot and theme and how those were expressed in speeches, stage directions and dialogue.

Homework was to do a reflection on the play and connect it to something in their lives.

NO QUIZ on prefixes and suffixes tomorrow.  I decided that we will work more on these before assessment to allow for successful comprehension.  We will work on this in class tomorrow.

Today we reviewed root words for the QUIZ tomorrow.  Please study the handout of the 15 root words, their meanings, and examples of each.

Also, we continued our overview of different genre by looking a a drama today "One Town's Beginnings" about the charter of Garner, NC as a township in 1905.  We read the story in class and filled out a prereading activity.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 26

Today we contined our examination of dialect. We read a story by Paul Laurence Dunbar entitled "The Finish of Patsy Barnes."  We talked about the impact dialect has on a story and why using dialect in writing makes it more interesting.

Homework:   All Blocks:  Reading and reading log (due Tues 9/30).

Blocks 3,4,5:  Quiz on ROOT words on Tues 9/30; Quiz on Prefixes and Suffixes on Thursday Oct. 2.  Students have a handout with these listed so they can study.

Block 3 only:  Write a paragraph using dialect.  Students could choose a topic from those listed on the board.  The paragraph must include dialogue between two or more characters. 

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25

Today we studied DIALECT and talked about how it was language to a particular region.  We then read two stories from our literature books that had examples of dialect in them - the folk tale "Brer Possum's Dilemma" and "Why the Waves Have White Caps" - a myth.  We practiced translating sentences from dialect to standard English.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24

Today we went over the homework on context clues and began learning about structural analysis of words (breaking words down into their parts - roots, prefixes and suffixes).  We completed work together on the prefix "sub" and then students completed classwork from their grammar books on suffixes, prefixes and roots.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 23

Today we continued our study of context clues by reviewing our homework and then reading a passage from "The Voyage to Roanoke Island."  This was a diary account of a colonist that the students were also studying in Social Studies with Mr. Flohr this week. 

We then went to the library for students to check out a book for outside reading.  This time it is a book of their choice - I just need to approve it.  They will have reading logs now distributed each Tuesday, due back, signed by a parent, on the following Tuesday.

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 22

Today we discussed how we can tackle words that are unfamiliar to us when we are reading.  I talked about context clues - looking at words within the sentence, synonyms, antonyms, etc. to help figure out the meaning of words.

Students read in their literature books, "From an American Childhood" by Annie Dillard.  They picked out unfamiliar words, tried to figure out their meaning and then went to the dictionary or computer for the actual definition.

I collected reading logs, mystery book reports and graded journals.

Today I also handed back the tests from yesterday (blocks 2-4 only) and we went over them in class.  Then we worked on structural analysis of words by breaking down words into parts.  We talked about "PHOBIAS" and then looked at several different words with -phobia in it.  The students guessed at their meaning based on the root words within each word.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 17

Today we reviewed for our unit test on mysteries.  Students have three sheets of review (what a great job in class today, by the way! :)) and they should study those.  In addition, I told them they need to look at ways that the stories can compare and contrast in terms of characters, point of view, plot, etc in preparation for an essay question that will require higher level thinking skills.

2nd block:  Field trip forms and Blue Student Identification sheets are due in ASAP.

Homework: Study for the test!  Mystery book report is due on Friday!

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 16

Block 2:  Today we read the play "Sorry, Wrong Number."  We talked about the elements of drama and went over the homework from last night, on point of view.  Homework tonight - read for 30 minutes,  work on reading log, and work on Mystery Book Report due on Friday. - TEST on Mystery Unit on Thursday!

Blocks 3-5:  Today we read "Why the Leaves Turn Color in the Fall" - an essay that led us to a discussion about mystery in our environment.  Students brainstormed mysteries that they knew about in our world and we then talked about how that relates to the fictional mysteries we have read.  Homework tonight - read for 30 minutes,  work on reading log, and work on Mystery Book Report due on Friday. Test on Mystery Unit on Thursday!

 

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 15

All blocks:

Today we finished our characterization chart from "The Tell Tale Heart."  Then we discussed the literary term "point of view."  We read a short story entitled "Strawberry Spring" and discussed point of view in relation to that story.  Students were given homework sheet on point of view to complete for tomorrow.

Also - homework for tonight - read 30 minutes and do reading log.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12

Today we took a Blue Diamond Assessment. These assessments will be given to students approximately every two weeks and follow the NC Course of Study for 8th grade language arts.  They allow us to see how students are progressing in mastering the content of 8th Grade language Arts.

We also watched the video of Edgar Allan Poe's story "Tell Tale Heart" and discussed similarities/differences between the written version of the short story that we read yesterday.

I checked journals today and took up reading logs for the week.  NO HOMEWORK for the weekend - enjoy your weekend!

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 11

Today we studied character development through comparing characters in Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Tell Tale Heart."  We then discussed the difference between a "flat" character and a "round" character.  We completed an extension activity in class re: characterization.

HOMEWORK:  Reading log due tomorrow; I will check journals tomorrow.  The mystery book report for ALL classes is now Friday Sept. 19.  (I changed it for my 3rd block to give students more time to finish reading their books.)

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10

All Blocks today:  Mr. Ellington, the 8th grade guidance counselor came in to talk to the students about high school requirments and expectations.

We distributed field trip forms.  We are going to Memorial Auditorium on November 12 to see a national tour company perform several of the short stories we have recently read in class.  Cost for the trip is $19.25/student and we need chaperones.  Please send a note in if you are interested in chaperoning - cost for chaperones is $14.25. 

Homework:  Read 30 minutes and do reading log.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 9

All blocks:

We finished "The Lottery" today in class and answered questions in class.  We discussed why people tend to act differently in groups than they would by themselves.  We had a great discussion about the effects of peer pressure on our decision making.   We also went to the library to renew our mystery books and/or check out a new book for outside reading.

Homework for tonight is to continue with the outside reading, completing the reading log and working on the Mystery Book Report.

We set up our writing folders today.  Each time the students do a writing assignment, they will record it in the folder per Wake County guidelines.

We began reading another mystery short story, The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson.  We will finish the story tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 3

ALL BLOCKS:

Today I took up the homework from last night.  I then reviewed literary terms with the students from the list given last week.  I narrowed down the number of terms they need to know for the test on Friday.  They also took notes on types of literature and conflict.  These notes will also be on the test on Friday.

We read "Monkey's Paw" in class - a mystery short story.  In blocks 3 we finished the story.  The other blocks will finish up tomorrow.

TEST on literary terms Friday.  Also reading logs, literary term definitions and journals are due Friday.

 

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 2

Today in class we reviewed the following literary terms:  plot, narrator, suspense, mystery, genre, character, conflict, setting, theme and fiction.  Students received a list of literary terms last Friday.  The test on these terms is THIS Friday, Sept. 5.  Students should either have Cornell notes with the terms or flashcards.  I will check those on Friday during the test.

In class we talked about a mystery and read the story "Night Burial."  We looked at unfamiliar vocabulary and made predictions about the story.  Students were asked to write an alternate ending the story. "What happened when Sara reached the cemetary?"  One paragraph in length - 3-5 sentences.  Paragraph should use "their" "there" and "they're" correctly in it as well as show a good ending to this story.

FRIDAY AUGUST 29

ALL BLOCKS:

Students were given a list of literary terms today with their defintions.  In class we highlighted the key words in each definition in order to practice picking out the most important parts of a defintion.  Then, students wrote down the abbreviated definitions in Cornell note form.  A quiz on these terms will be NEXT FRIDAY, SEPT.5.  Encourage your student to study a little each night - there are over 40 terms.  While most of them are a review from previous years, there are some new terms as well.

Homework this weekend - Reading their mystery book for outside reading.

THURSDAY AUGUST 28

ALL BLOCKS:

Today in all classes I checked student homework on the "I am From" poem.  Students wrote their final copies and turned in the work in class. 

I gave out the reading logs for the outside reading book they got in the library yesterday.  Students should be reading 30 minutes per night.  The first reading log will be due NEXT Friday, Sept. 5.  After this first time, students will receive logs each Monday and will need to turn them on Friday of the same week. 

NO HOMEWORK TONIGHT!!!  (except for reading)

Students were issued lockers today.  Also - remember that Monday is a holiday!

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27

Today we went to the library for orientation.  Ms. Hendricks, our medial specialist talked to the students about the resources in the library, the circulation procedure for checking out books, and also talked to them about choosing a book for their first outside reading assignment.

Students must choose a MYSTERY book for their first outside reading.  Books must be shown to me on Tuesday Sept. 2nd for approval.  Students will complete weekly reading logs beginning next week that must be signed by a parent/guardian on Thursday night for Friday collection.  A project that ties to this reading will be given out in a week or so.  STUDENTS SHOULD BE READING 30 MINUTES PER NIGHT.

Homework:  Fill in the template for the poem we worked on in class on Tuesday entitled "Where I'm From."  Prewriting was done in class on Tuesday so students can plug in what they did in class to the poem template I gave them.




TUESDAY AUGUST 26

ALL BLOCKS:

Students turned in homework paper "Who Am I?" and their signed class policies.

Today we began work on a poem "Where I Come From."  We read the poem " Where I'm From" by George Ella Lyon and then worked on a prewriting activity to prepare students to write their own similar poem.  Homework for THURSDAY is to come up with their own poem based on the prewriting we did in class.


MONDAY AUGUST 25

ALL BLOCKS:

Today we went over rules and procedures for our class.  Students are to allow parents/guardians to read the syllabus, rules and procedures and sign the student/parent contract.  Students need to bring in the signed contracts tomorrow for a homework grade.

Also for homework:  3 paragraph paper entitled "Who Am I?"  First paragraph - your name, date of birth, where you were born, where you live now, other places you have lived.  Second paragraph -about your family, friends and activities/sports you like.  Third paragraph - your strengths/weaknesses in Language Arts.

Students must do Prewriting (brainstorming of ideas for each paragraph) and then a draft - in blue/black ink.  Due tomorrow.

 

Please see the generic class supply list for HRMS for needed supplies. In addition - each student will need a journal for Language Arts. I would prefer a bound composition book - but a single subject, spiral notebook will also work.

3" 3 ring binder (1 for all your classes); 2 pkgs of dividers with pockets; pencil pouch; 2 1-subject notebooks (for LA and SS); loose leaf paper; pens/pencils (blue or black ONLY); erasers; highlighters

***UPDATE****Due to an increase in poor classroom behavior and work that is incomplete, the Tiger team has put "Lunch Detention" into place.  Students are given one warning in class for behavior, and then issued lunch detention if the behavior persists.  If they fail to complete an assignment, a teacher may also give lunch detention.  If the student does not come to detention or has more than two in a week, they will receive an administative referral.  We are cracking down on behavior, getting students ready for the rigor of high school. 

(2) detentions in a week = a referral to the asst. principal.  This referral will result in AfterSchool Detention.  4th detention will result in lunch ISS.  5th detention will result in full day of ISS.  6th detention and beyond - multiple days of ISS or OSS.
