"WHAT IS THE USE OF A BOOK?" THOUGHT ALICE, "WITHOUT PICTURES OR CONVERSATIONS?" lewis carroll
WEEKLY ROUTINES Students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade come in as a class every week. One week they check out books. The next week is a lesson or activity. This year Kindergarten and Second Grade will be checking out books every week. When there are no classes scheduled those time frames are dedicated times for all students K through Eight.
One's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions. oliver wendell holmes

POETRY AT ASCENSION SCHOOL Our school has one of the finest poetry collections any Catholic School Library can have. Often a teacher checks out twenty, thirty, or more books in our collection. We concentrated on building up this area of our collection when we received so many donations. We have anthologies. We have many volumes of the major American poets including Emily Dickenson, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Carl Sandburg, Robert Frost, and others. We have volumes of humorous poetry. Some are by Shel Silverstein, Ogden Nash, and Bruce Lansky. We always have a special activity during the month of April, but poetry is popular all year long.
"My words fly up, my thoughts remain below; words without thoughts never to heaven go." william shakespeare
AT SACHS, DANIEL BOONE AND ANY OF THE COUNTY LIBRARIES Here's how it works: When you check out books for yourself or your children, say, "I'd like "VACATION CHECKOUT." Your books will be checked out for A MONTH instead of the usual two weeks. Vacation Checkout will work unless the book is a two-week only checkout. Most books are not, just the current best-sellers. You can also renew your books over the internet or by calling the library.
"BUT WORDS ARE THINGS, AND A SMALL DROP OF INK FALLING LIKE DEW UPON A THOUGHT, PRODUCES THAT WHICH MAKES THOUSANDS, PERHAPS MILLIONS THINK." lord byron
THE Betsy-Tacy Books We recommend two classic books. They are: Betsy and Tacy and Betsy, Tacy, and Tib. The author is Maud Hart Lovelace. The illustrator is Lois Lenski. Visit the Betsy-Tacy website to learn why these classic books have been loved through the years. (betsy-tacysociety.org/)
OUR VOLUNTEERS We are so grateful for our volunteers and their dedication to the children of Ascension. The Ascension Volunteers shelve books, check books in and out, decorate the display windows, dust and clean, and perform many other tasks. The most important thing they do is make the Ascension Library welcoming to all the students. We don't know what we'd do without them. Our volunteers for the 2009-2010 school year are: Mary Beth Schwarz, Michelle Thurmann, Lori Ennis, Elise Joplin Joi Dollar Trudi McFerron Karen Beard Cindy Piephoff, Christine Eilerman Beth Caselton, Kathy LaMantia, Elise Joplin, Deb Boland, Sharon Olwig, Dr. Kurt Studt Kelly Lane Mary Ann Ignaczak

THANK YOU, ERIKA OLSON Our latest, and most popular window was all about horses. This window was inspired by Erika Olson from Mrs. Appelbaum's 6th Grade. Erika has been drawing horses since she was a little girl. She's still drawing AND she has become a skilled horsewoman. So many students stopped to view this window. Erika brought her own model horse collection which she placed among the books. ALSO, other Ascension horseback riders brought in photographs of themselves on their favorite steeds. The equistrians were Erika Violet Albitar Lily Albitar Megan Eilerman

"Chosen By. . . " The books in this display case are books that three people/students recommend. Sometimes other students check out these books because they know the students who chose these books and might like what they like. You would be amazed at how quickly these books are checked out. We think it's because they are chosen by our students!
