English:  NOV. 16-24

We are still working on verbs.  Within the next week and a half we will be covering linking verbs, simple tenses, the progressive tense, and the perfect tenses.

 Objectives to be covered:

  • To identify linking verbs and their complements
  • To identify and use verbs in the present, past, and future tenses
  • To identify and use verbs in the present progressive and past progressive tenses
  • To identify and use verbs in the present perfect and past perfect tenses

Material covered on the second verb test:

  • transitive and intransitive verbs
  • linking verbs
  • being able to tell whether the complement of a linking verb is used as a noun, pronoun, or adjective
  • tenses of the verbs.  Students should be able to identify what the tense of the verb in a sentence is.

The test is scheduled for Tuesday,  Nov. 24.

After the test is taken we will continue our study of verbs, pages 404-418.  We will be spending a considerable amount of time covering this material.

Sincerely,

Mr. Coco

SOCIAL STUDIES:   NOV. 16-24

We will be finishing our study of ancient Egypt the week of Nov. 16.  The students have worked on translating hieroglyphics and will be creating a small Egyptian project using hieroglyphics.

We will be starting Chapter 2, section 4, the week of Nov. 16.  This section traces how the Nubians built the civilization of Kush, which eventually took control of Egypt.

After reading this section, students will be able to:

  • describe the Nubian kingdom south of Egypt.

Our test on this section will be either Dec. 3 or 4th.  NO STUDY GUIDE.  I will review with the students prior to the test.  They can take notes from which to study.

Sincerely,

Mr. Coco

LITERATURE:   NOV. 16-24

We will be starting into our study of short stories with the introduction to short stories material on pages 178-187.  Our model story will be THE WOUNDED WOLF by Jean Craighead George.

Objectives for our first story:

Students will

  • understand the characteristics and elements of short stories
  • learn about author Jean Craighead George.
  • read and analyze a short story
  • relate visuals to elements of short stories

Our next two stories will be dealing with making inferences and characterization.

I will be giving test over the next two stories, THE TAIL by Joyce Hansen and DRAGON, DRAGON by John Gardner individually.  Since these are very long stories, they will not be given together as were some in the past.

THE TAIL test will hopefully be by Nov. 20th and the DRAGON, DRAGON by Dec. 2nd or 3rd.

Study guides will be provided for these test.

Sincerely,

Mr. Coco
