RELIGION                                                                  November 2, 2009

This week the students will meet with their buddies on Thursday to brainstorm ideas about a story for the Build-a-book project they will be doing on Nov. 17.  After the brainstorming session, the 8th graders will write the story, pencil it into the book, and then on the 17th they will work with the 1st graders to complete it by adding artwork and going over the pencil with marker.

This week we are working on Ch. 3 in our text and will plan to have a test over the chapter on Friday.  Students need to use the online quiz as a way of reviewing for the test.  Some reports on not coming through email -- double-check to see that the email address is correct.  To make sure they receive credit, have them print off the score sheet and attach it to the test.

Students will receive information on their saint's report project in the near future.

We have begun collecting toiletry items for the service project -- please send in any TRAVEL size items or items from hotel visits.  These will be placed in lunch bag size sacks, so large items do not work. Items need to be turned in by Nov. 30.

REMINDERS:

Parent Mass for 8th Grade will be November 18, so mark your calendars.  Students should be bringing home your invitation today.

Confirmation Information forms and Sponsor Affirmation forms are due DECEMBER 1ST. Only a couple forms have been turned in so far.  Please do not wait until the last minute to get the sponsor forms to the sponsors as they will need time to get them filled out in their home parish.

Algebra:  November 2 - 6      Mrs. Gross

I will return last week's test to the 8th grade today, Monday.  They will, as usual, have an opportunity to increase their grade by getting it signed and making the appropriate corrections, showing all the necessary work.  The corrected test must be turned in by 7:50 Tuesday morning.

We will then begin chapter 4, working with linear equations.  We worked with linear equations last year so hopefully this chapter will go smoothly. Friday's quiz will be over sections 4.1 - 4.3.

There is a new access code for the online edition.  It is C3544BC7AD.  I hope this works for everyone.

LITERATURE     November 2 - 6

We will return the selection test over John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley" this week so be sure and ask to see it.  We will then begin the next selection, "The American Dream."  There will be a test over this selection on Thursday, Nov. 5th.

The vocabulary quiz  covering the words from the two selections, "Travels with Charley," and "The American Dream" will be next Monday, November 9th.

The students also have a short project over the play they attended last week.  They are asked to make a poster advertising "The Hobbit."  The poster is due this Friday, November 6th.

ENGLISH                                                             week of November 9, 2009

Don't forget to call Mrs. McCarthy on Thursday, November 5, between 9AM and 2PM to schedule conferences with any or all of your child's teachers.  The conferences will be held on Thursday, November 12, between 7AM and 7PM.

MONDAY - Write descriptive essays

TUESDAY - Finish descriptive essays

WEDNESDAY - Draw from essays

THURSDAY - Conferences

FRIDAY - NO SCHOOL

The second part of the book is where we spend about two-thirds of the school year, working on grammar. Most of what we cover is review from previous years, with new, slightly more complicated material added as we go through each chapter. The only entirely new chapter in this part is the one on verbals: participles, gerunds, and infinitives.

Please encourage your children to study a little every night, especially the nights after they have taken notes in class. It will give them an opportunity to ask questions if they realize that they really do not understand a section, before we go on to the next lesson. Some of the chapters are long, and the students really cannot memorize all of the material in one or two nights before the tests. Occasionally, I will give pop quizzes to be sure students are studying the material a little at a time, rather than waiting until just before tests.

Science: Mrs. Carroll  November 6,2009
We are working in chapter 5.  This is about chemical reactions and being able to read chemical formulas.  There will not be an article due until after conferences.  Monday, we will practice on the board working with several equations.  There will be 2 worksheets sent home next week on 2 different days that will give the children time to practice. Have a good weekend.  Don't forget to call my extension if you need to talk and we can see where to fit you in.  Have a good weekend.
