Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Students:

In the past years, St. Dominic High School and the Ascension Families have shared Christmas joy with the families in Drift, Kentucky.  This Christmas season, we are conducting a toy drive for the families in Drift as well as Whole Kids Outreach here in St. Louis. If your family is able to participate, please purchase a new, unused toy. Both charities are open to toys for a variety of age levels. Toys that do not require battery replacements are probably a good choice.  When you consider what toys to buy, purchase the items your own children would enjoy or even allow your children the opportunity to choose the gift. Please send the unwrapped toy to the classroom collection by November 16th.  If you have any large cardboard boxes we could use for packing the toys, please send those to school too.

Your generosity is always appreciated.   May we all celebrate a blessed Christmas.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Woolbright

Mrs. Vesper

How does Accelerated Reader Work?

In September, students took the Star Reading Test on the computer.  Mrs.Lynch provided the teachers with the results of the test, which were sent home in the Friday folder. Then, the teachers assigned an appropriate reading level for individual students. Students chose a book for their November Accelerated Reader test.  I advise students to write a sentence or two at the end of each chapter to increase comprehension. After reading the novel, students will use the computer to complete an accelerated reader test.

Math Extra Credit Problem of the Week  - due by Friday this week– 3 points – You must show your work and the answer on a piece of loose-leaf.

Barry and Brian like to play marbles. One Saturday morning, Barry had 56 marbles and Brian had 47 marbles.

They played for 3 hours on Saturday afternoon.  Barry won 9 marbles from Brian and Brian won 12 marbles from Barry.

How many marbles did each boy have in the end?
