What's Up in First Grade??

We are blessed to have been granted more PE time so please note the changes on your calendar.  We will be having PE on Monday September 21 and September 28.  Please send your child to school with a pair of athletic shoes.

Homework News

Math

We are moving into Geometry this week.  We will be working with plane shapes and 3D shapes.  The homework for this week will be using the number line for addition (page 245/246).

Language Arts

In Language Arts we are still working on identifying proper nouns.  I will be including post-it's in the blue reading book pocket for them to look for proper nouns in their reading.  We are still working on this skill so please help us.

Spelling

We will continue with the short a pattern next week but add a few more blends into the mix.  The children did well this week and we are looking forward to seeing these new patterns in their writing.

Scholastic

I have posted two different Scholastic Book Orders for September.  As I have been working with your children the last two weeks I have noticed that we have a number of children who are reading above the first grade level.  See Saw book club is for students in K-1 while Arrow is for students in grades 2-3.  This will give you a better selection if your child is reading above the first grade level.  I really appreciate your support of Scholastic Book Orders in our classroom.  Scholastic gives our classroom points for each book ordered and those points are the reason our classroom has such a wealth of resources.

Calendar News

The names on the monthly calendar indicate the leader for the day. That child is encouraged to bring a sharing item (one that fits into their book bag) to talk about and a favorite snack to share with the class (we have 17 children as of today).
