Monday

Objective: Students will analyze a poem about bullying.

In- class Activity

(I will issue a different poem to each student) (put in journals)

  • Read the poem several times
  • Determine the literal, or actual, meaning
  • Based on the evidence in the poem (words, phrases, tone), construct a meaning (this is your understanding)
  • Write 3 to 4 sentences on what the poem is about (a brief summary in your own words).

Questions

1. Who is the speaker?

2. What is the tone of voice?

3. Who is the speaker's audience?

4. What is the poem's literal meaning?

5. What is the poem's theme, or central message?

6. What is the poem's structure? Is it one long piece? Divided into stanzas? Is the message straightforward and logical? Or Does it shift with random thoughts?

7. Does the poem rhyme? Plot the rhyme pattern. Discuss.

8. What kind of sound devices are used? internal rhyme? end rhyme? alliteration? assonance (similar vowel sounds in words)? consonance (similar consonant sounds)? repetition of certain words?

9. Do the lines end with a complete thought and end punctuation, or is the poem a free verse (lines flow from one to the next without pause).

10. Discuss the poem's language. What kinds of words are used? If there is repetittive words, what might that mean? How do the words affect the poem's tone?

TUESDAY

Objective: Students will analyze poem about bullying

Activities

  • Spelling/Vocabulary Test
  • Complete analyses of poems.
  • Whole-class discussion
  • Write a 1/2 comparison between your poem and the previously viewed filem, "The Instigator"
  • Teacher Read-Aloud: The Bully, a short story by Graham Pockett

Wednesday

Objective: Students will read a short story

Activities

  • In groups of twos or threes, each student will read a portion of the story The Bully, by Roger Dean Kiser.
  • Complete a reading response in journals
  • Create a VENN comparing and contrasting character in this story to characters in The Instigator, The Bully by author Graham Pocket, and in student's assigned poem.
