Welcome to Mrs. Basinger's

2nd Grade Adventure Tour

November is a beutiful month, but a strange month on the calendar for school. It is full of short weeks-- check your child's planner for reminders of workdays, vacation days, field trips and early dismissals for parades. Enjoy the extra time together!

Continue to ensure your child is reading 20 minutes every night.  It is not necessary to read with your child every night--they need practice reading independently, but try to at least once or twice a week listen to them read for at least ten minutes.

My email is as follows:  basingar@rss.k12.nc.us

flashcards- 200 high frequency words are accessible at the top of this page for your child to practice. These are the same words that I assess them on each quarter. Students are expected to be able to read and spell all of these words.

calendar- Field trips, programs, due dates, test, etc. can all be viewed.

weekly homework assignments- Students will read 20 minutes five nights a week. We will be working on spelling the 2nd grade high frequency words. Accelerated math will be sent home on Mondays through Thursdays once these programs are up and running on our computer system at school.

Monday: Write five sentences with the first five spelling words.

Tuesday: Write five sentences with the second five spelling words.

Wednesday: Student are to use their spelling words in any creative way that they wish. They may cheer them out with you, cut letters out and glue them to a page, color the words, type them on a computer, etc... This is meant to be fun for the students. I am not grading this other than for completion.

Thursday: Write each spelling word three times each.

Answer Safari- Every week five questions will be posted for students and parents to answer. One question will come from each of the following five categories: social studies, science, math, language arts, and current events.

1. What is a prediction? (Language Arts)

2. If I have 8 ones and 3 groups of ten, how many do I have? (Math)

3. What is one thing we said about being a Knollwood Knight? (social studies)

4. What are the four seasons? (science)

5. Name the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate running for President? (current event)

If a student brings in five correct answers, they will get three stars added to the star chart.

What would you like for me to teach? If you email me a topic, I will take the challenge to find a story or create a lesson that will use your idea! Parents, please help your child use this method of communication. Let us show children together how computers can be used to share ideas.
