Mrs. Basinger Things are so busy! 3rd graders are working on their science fair projects. One class is identifying the best method for preserving a carved pumpkin while another class is comparing the iron in cereal. Classroom teachers will be getting 4th and 5th graders started very soon. It is a great opportunity for students to put knowledge to work! 4th grade is working on "The Mysterious Benedict Society". This is a great story about gifted children. 5th grade will be starting "Where the Red Fern Grows". No matter what I am not going to cry during this novel-- it is a tear jerker! The Singapore math model drawing is going really well. I am amazed by some of the problems that the children can solve. Often, I am thankful to have an answer key! 5th grade will be focusing on fractions for the next few weeks and 4th will focus on division. Please feel free to contact me any time. I appreciate all the support that you offer your children and the restraint that you sometimes have to show in allowing them to solve problems on their own. Following is my daily schedule: 8:00-9:00 4th Grade Reading 9:15-10:15 5th Grade Reading 10:20-11:20 5th Grade Math 11:20-11:50 Lunch 11:50-12:30 Planning 12:30-1:30 4th Grade Math 1:30-2:25 K-3rd Grade Students do not need any materials for class unless they would like to purchase a 2 inch binder in their favorite color. I will have binders, paper and pencils for students to use. Students can look forward to starting off the year with several short stories and Socratic seminars. After the second week of school we will begin a novel story in 5th grade. We will be starting in Colonial times and move through history to present day by the end of the year. This will allow for history to be integrated into our reading. I am planning to begin a novel in 4th grade soon as well. I thinking that we may try tackling "39 Clues". It is a challenging book but I think that students will love it and motivate them to read! Our math lessons will utilize Singapore Math. If you Google it you will find a lot of information. It has a heavy focus on problem solving through model drawing. We will also utilize Week by Week Essentials as homework. Students will have the week to solve and reply to the problems and then we will discuss their responses on Fridays. There is a lot to cover but we will enjoy the challenge. At any time that you have questions or concerns, please call! I will return your call at the first available moment. Disclaimer:
