Salvete, Parentes et Discipuli!

(Greetings, Parents and Students!)

Update for the week of. . .

Dies Mercurii, Maius XXIII, MMXII

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Science DCAS in the A.M. this Wednesday.

Parents, please be checking home access center for any missing grades (INC or "0" indicate this) for your students.  Please encourage them to get in all missing work as soon as possible for a score! All LDCP project scores and Motto Mania scores should be entered by the end of this week.

This week the "in-class" project, the remaining assignment for this course for the year, will be worked on in class by the Orange and Blue teams, whom I will see in the afternoon.  Students are to brainstorm derivatives, at least one from each word unit we have covered during this year, and come up with a simple story that uses the words correctly in its context.  This project is to give students an opportunity to creatively apply and demonstrate what they have learned, and it helps me to assess whether they have reached the main learning targets of this Latin course (see course syllabus).  Students will be encouraged to work with their learning partners.  Scoring rubrics are attached to a step-by-step instructions sheet.  All in-class projects are to be completed and turned in by June 6, at the latest.  All teams will have to complete their projects at home, if they are not finished to the level of expectation in class.  Completed projects can be submitted to me via email attachment, as well as turned in physically.

Students should begin now to review study sheets 1-6 for final exam!   (Review schedule below!)

 *************************************************

REMINDERS FOR EVERY QUARTER (or marking period):

*Latin Detectives Club Project (LDCP):

Please remember throughout the quarter and the year, that students should constantly be on the "lookout" for Latin "clues" (either Latin words, cognates, and/or phrases, or English words- -derivatives-- that come from Latin). . .

(Parents, please read over the information for this project when the folder is brought home if you have not already.)  One Latin Detectives Club Project will be due each quarter.  Parents must sign this project to confirm that they were aware of the project and that the clues their students found were "honestly" found clues.  Students may find more than the required three clues to earn bonus points which can be added to an assignment or assessment of choice (up to 2 points each).  There are also certificates, pins, and recognition given to those students who go above and beyond to acquire the most clues for each class, and a "Top NCS Latin Detective" is honored every year.  Looking for extra clues is purely a choice of the student, and is not required, but it is much appreciated (even if it is only one extra clue!)

LATE LATIN WORK/ABSENCE MAKE-UP WORK POLICY:

Students who are absent should check the schedule above for homework that is due and make sure they get the necessary sheets from the Latin room (ROOM 203).  Extra copies of worksheets they may have missed are in my "Labor Latinus" corner on top of the cubbies there, any day of the week.  They can also check with me on the Wednesday following their return to school for make-up work.  THIS IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY.  They have an extra week to turn in their make-up work.  Late work, early work, or absentee work should be turned in as soon as possible to the "LATIN WORK" bin of the correct team color, on top of my cubbies, any day of the week.  Students may do this during homeroom times with their teacher's permission, or in between classes.  This availability and access is to make the turning in of any work as convenient as possible, since I am only in the middle school building on Wednesdays.

"Trying to keep up with new technology" notes:

New "Study Blue" website offers apps with flashcards students can use for learning their Latin or Spanish vocabulary.

Kindle book readers who find Latin clues can document their "find" by including the number at the bottom of the screen of their Kindle. (State the title of the book, and then "Kindle screen #____.")

Parents and students (with parents' permission) may email me (Mrs. Foraker) any questions or concerns through the email option on this page, or to my email address: eforaker@ncs.k12.de.us.

PACEM VOBIS!
