Language Arts- THREE BOOK REPORTS ARE REQUIRED THIRD NINE WEEKS **great website** www.bookadventure.com We will study vocabulary, comprehension and other key skills through novel reading and centers this year. Our novel is "Earthquake Terror" about a boy named Jonathan and the terrible event his family experiences on a vacation.
Our centers will be word work activlesson, vocabulary activities on computer, expository writing about how to make our favorite sandwich, Earthquake Map (SS & Science) and SRA reading activites. We will have new vocabulary this week from our new novel. We are having spelling words so this week. They will be our vocabulary words and contract spelling activities (4) are due each Friday! Practice reading 120 words per minute! Please practice with daily vocabulary activities! Don't forget to check out The 12 powerful words flashcards below! ** CENTER WORK IS DUE ON FRIDAY **
Math- We will study number and operations, decimals, fractions, geometry, algebra, and problem-solving this school year. We finished fractions as our topic. Fractions are a big part of fifth grade math so continue to do problems at home for practice. We will study algebra/Hands-On equations for our next topic. We will use pawns and a balance to show equaling of equations. PLEASE PRACTICE BASIC FACTS SINCE THIS IS A HUGE PART OF STUDENTS UNDERSTANDING FRACTIONS!! We will use technology, calculators, math centers, and use hands-on manipulatives during math class. Please remember to continue practicing your basic multiplication and division facts during this school year!! Our math book is available on-line through www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
Social Studies- We are integrating SS into our reading curriculum this year.
Our lessons for the nine weeks will relate to our novel "Earthquake Terror". We will cover government. We will do activlessons about branches of government. We will also do textwork on the levels of government including national and state. We will do a group project on making a law/bill in the classroom. We will do many activities and projects for our SS units this year. We will do center activities, technology projects, and student-created products. Our next study will be on Canada, its history economics and government.
Science- GREAT JOB ON SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS!! We will study landforms, biomes, weather & climate along with force & motion this school year. We will be studying Force and Motion during February and March. We will do experiments, Itec lessons, and focus on vocabulary related to Force and Motion.
Please ask your students frequently what they have
learned to review what they know about force and motion. Please help your students practice and review this vocabulary at home.
Health- We will be studying personal health, decision making skills and substance abuse this school year. Our lessons will take
place during 4th 9 weeks.
