crayons, scissors, glue stick (many projects require gluing paper, Elmer's school glue does not dry fast enough for these projects)

crayons, scissors, glue sticks, Elmer's glue, markers both fat and thin, watercolor paints, ruler (6, 7 & 8 only - colored pencils)

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is participating in the Diocesan Art Contest. The class discussed what "Service" means. Then they gave examples how they have helped others.  They drew these ideas in colorful detail to share with each other.

painting.

How does the artist use color in this painting?

Do you see warm colors or cool colors or both? Describe where.

Does the artist use shades of colors? Where do you see them and what colors are they?

Does the artist use tints of colors? Where do you see them and what colors are they?

How does this painting make you feel when you look at it?

Grade 6 -

Sixth grade is working on a project that explores shape and form.

Why is Shape important? We recognize objects by their shapes. If you se the back of a stop sign (not

the red side) you know it is not a yield sign because of its shape.

What is Shape? Shape is a two-dimensional area that is defined in some way.

In what two ways can you define shape?

-A shape can be Geometric. a geometric shape is a shape that it is
precise and can be defined mathematically. For example, a square can be defined as: Perimeter = 4 x 1
side.

-A shape can be Free-Form or Organic. Free-Form shapes are irregular and uneven. they are shapes that tend to be found
in nature.

What is Form? Forms are objects that have three-dimensions. Do not confuse shapes with forms!
Consider the following:

Shape  Form

circle Sphere

Square Cube

Triangle Pyramid

What is Positive and Negative Space? Positive and Negative Space is the emptiness or area
between, around, above, below, or within objects. Shapes and forms exist in space. All objects take up space.

Positive Space is the figure or shapes in a work of art.

Negative Space is the empty spaces between the shapes or forms.

Shapes can be made into forms by shading the object to show
shadows or light and dark areas on the object.

Computers

Grade 1

First grade has been working on "My Computer Book". They have learned the names of the different parts such as a mouse or monitor.

Grade 2

The Second grade is using Kidspriation Software to organize ideas and then write about them.

The class has learned how to use Spelling City software to practice their weekly spelling words.  Parents may set up an account for their child to save the list.  This site if free and the children loved to "play" with their spelling words. Go to http://spellingcity.com

Grade 3

The Third Grade class has been chosen to pilot a new Math program. This program is Internet based. The website is First in Math and can be found at http://www.firstinmath.com/ Each student has been given an ID and password. Twice a week, the students will login while in the computer lab and practice their math skills using the 24 Challenge game. All Diocesan third grades are participating in this program. Not only will your child's progress be recorded (for school use only), but our school will be ranked with other participating schools.

Some websites students can use to practice the multiplication table

Grade 4

Grade 5

This year the 5th grade class will be learning the touch method of typing.

Grade 6

Grade 7

The 7th grade will be working on an Unit that includes the following topics: Internet Safety, Cyber-Bullying, Netiquette, Chat Rooms, and Social Networking sites such as My Space. The purpose of this unit is to help "tweens" (11, 12, 13, 14 year olds) recognize the benefits and dangers of the Internet. It is important for this age group to understand that while the Internet is an invaluable educational tool it is also a place where caution and common sense are needed.

The lessons that we have been using can be found on www.NetSmartz.org. There are video clips told by teens to your teens to help them think about ways to use the Internet responsibly. We have been using the lesson plans to spark classroom discussions on these topics. I encourage you to view the clips and look at the content in the lessons so you can keep an open, ongoing dialogue with your child.

The best way to keep your child safe on the Internet is to be informed. Teens love to talk. Ask them about their Internet use. Be involved. Let them know from time to time you will be standing over their shoulder to see who they are chatting with and what they are saying on-line. If your child minimizes the screen when you approach chances are you need to see what they are doing! Check out http://da.co.la.ca.us/pok/poklist.htm if you are having a difficult time understanding the IM Chat lingo.

All experts agree, computers with Internet capability should not be located in a child's bedroom. The computer should be within clear visibility of parents while the child is on the Internet. This is not so parents can be snoopy; it is to help protect your child. At a recent Internet safety conference, John Morganelli, Northampton County DA, reminded us that there are questionable individuals that are on the Internet 24/7 looking for a child. Don't let that child be yours!

Here are some Internet "Do's" to share with your child. 1. Keep computers with Internet access in an open, commonly used space. 2. Never give out personal information or passwords. 3. Don't believe everything you see or read - just because someone says they're 13 doesn't mean it's true. 4. Use Netiquette - be polite online just as you would off-line. 5. Don't send messages to someone else when your are angry - once a message is sent, you can't take it back. 6. Don't open a message from someone you don't know. 7. If it doesn't look or feel right, it probably isn't. 8. You don't have to be "Always On" turn off, disconnect, unplug, try actual reality instead of virtual reality. Give yourself a break!

Cyber Wise Study Guide Some Facts to Know * Information that is posted on the Internet is not private. * Cyber bullying is against the law. This plan should be discussed with your parents or guardians. And as always, you should be able to talk to your parents or guardians about any issue on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Grade 8

Eighth grade has just completed their web pages.  They built a  page using html that covered a topic related to maned space flight.  The web pages were terrific!

Going from web pages to blogging the class will learn about web 2.0 and collaboration. They will be part of a class community that posts ideas and thoughts about their final year at Sacred Heart School.
