Welcome to the 8th grade! Welcome to your 21st century classroom! We now have iPads!!!!! We are working on Algebra. This is a difficult unit at times due to the abstract nature. I am available for tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:30 for extra help. We will be utilizing KHAN Academy, TenMarks, EDU 2.0, Gaggle, ClassScape, Assistments, Math Forum and SAS Curriculum sites for homework and classwork. Homework is assigned every Tuesday and collected the following Tuesday. Since I give a week to do the homework assignment I do not accept it late. My e-mail address is millerac@rss.k12.nc.us Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Each day we begin class with a 5 question warm up. These questions involve skills students have previously learned either in earlier grades or earlier in the year. If your son/daughter is struggling with these they should first come to me during Discovery Time for extra help. If this time is not sufficient then we can talk about additional help after school. Students are responsible each day for knowing their integer rules. Students can find the rules listed below if needed. This week's vocabulary are listed below. They should be defined in your notebook.
12 Power Words: Trace, Analyze, Infer, Evaluate, Formulate, Describe, Support, Explain, Summarize, Compare, Contrast, and Predict. 12 NEW Power Words: Verify-show me why it's right Not-no way/no how Justify-prove it (give reasons) Distinguish-all the ways they are different Author's Purpose-why it was written Conclusion-what was it all about Demonstrate-take me through the steps/show me how Classify-Put in the right group Evidence-Things that prove it Determine-Figure it out Persuade-make me believe it Characteristics-list things about it/tell me all about it 12 Math Words Sum-add it up Simplify-to break it down Product-multiply Evaluate-solve Prime numbers-stand alone Composite-has a lot of factors Fraction-just a part Value-what it's worth Classify-put in groups Quotient-divide Difference-take away Variable-number in disguise 12 8th Grade Power Words: Convert, Associate, Characterize, Conclude, Distribute, Correlate, Synthesize, Design, Monitor, Exhibit, Identify and Substitute. The integer rules are extremely important for 8th grade math and should have been learned previously. We will review these throughout the year to make sure these are not forgotten.The rules are as follows: When adding integers that are the same sign add and keep the sign. When adding integers that are different in sign SUBTRACT and keep the sign of the larger number. When subtracting integers keep the first number the same, change the subtraction to addition and change the second number to its opposite sign. Then follow the above addition rules. When multiplying or dividing numbers that are the same sign the answer is POSITIVE. When multiplying or dividing numbers that are different in sign the answer is NEGATIVE. There are flashcards above to practice the application of the above rules. For additional practice and examples of these rules please click on the attachments at the top of this site. They are Powerpoint files so if you don't have Powerpoint on your computer please first click on the link directly below this sentence to download it for FREE! PLEASE provide an e-mail address if you have one so that you can be kept up to date on all class changes. I will try to e-mail grades this year to those who have e-mail which is an excellent way to stay on top of any problems before they can't be fixed. If you have not received an e-mail from me yet either I don't have your address or I have the wrong one. Several messages have come back undeliverable. Always feel free to call or e-mail me and let me know if there is anything I can do to make this a better year. Many problems are due to a simple miscommunication and a ten minute conversation can make a big difference! PLEASE don't hesitate to call or e-mail if you have concerns. If there is a word you can not find use the second link for a standard dictionary.
