Welcome to the 8th Grade!  Enjoy your time out of school this week...see you when the roads clear.

The second report card goes home the next day we are back in school.

My e-mail address is millerac@rss.k12.nc.us  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Each day we begin class with a 5 question warm up.  These questions involve skills students have previously learned either in earlier grades or earlier in the year.  If your son/daughter is stuggling with these please make arrangments with me to either come early or stay after school for extra help.

Students received a new portfolio January 11th. There will not be any second chances this time so it needs to be completed as much as possible by February 12th.  Some did not do very well on the last portfolio because they did not have very many pages completed.

I know a lot of students are getting sick this time of year and are frequently out for multiple days.  Any work in the portfolio that can be done while they are home will be very helpful.  All other work missed does not have to be made up.

Students are responsible each day for knowing their integer rules.  Students can find the rules listed below if needed.  We have already cycled around all of the operations and are back to addition.

Students have a portfolio that we are working on in class.  While there is no assigned homework at this time, I have suggested that they work on some of this at home especially some of the extra credit, just in case they need it later.

Extra Credit for this quarter:  Workbook pages 1-35, 64-70

The calendar above this site will include information about assignments, projects and all class or team activities.

Tutoring is available with me on Mondays and Thursdays.  Students simply need to let me know they will be staying.

12 Power Words:  Trace, Analyze, Infer, Evaluate, Formulate, Describe, Support, Explain, Summarize, Compare, Contrast, and Predict.

12 8th Grade Power Words:  Convert, Associate, Characterize, Conclude, Distribute, Correlate, Synthesize, Design, Monitor, Exhibit, Identify and Substitute.

The integer rules are extremely important for 8th grade math and should have been learned previously.  We will review these throughout the year to make sure these are not forgotten.

The rules are as follows:

When adding integers that are the same sign add and keep the sign.

When adding integers that are different in sign SUBTRACT and keep the sign of the larger number.

When subtracting integers keep the first number the same, change the subtraction to addition and change the second number to its opposite sign.  Then follow the above addition rules.

When multiplying or dividing numbers that are the same sign the answer is POSITIVE.

When multiplying or dividing numbers that are different in sign the answer is NEGATIVE.

There are flashcards above to practice the application of the above rules.

For additional practice and examples of these rules please click on the attachments at the bottom of this site.  They are Powerpoint files so if you don't have Powerpoint on your computer please first click on the link directly below this sentence to download it for FREE!

PLEASE provide an e-mail address if you have one so that you can be kept up to date on all class changes.  I will try to e-mail grades this year to those who have e-mail which is an excellent way to stay on top of any problems before they can't be fixed.  If you have not received an e-mail from me yet either I don't have your address or I have the wrong one.  Several messages have come back undeliverable.

Always feel free to call or e-mail me and let me know if there is anything I can do to make this a better year. Many problems are due to a simple miscommunication and a ten minute conversation can make a big difference! PLEASE don't hesitate to call or e-mail if you have concerns.  If this site still leaves you with questions please check out the site below.

The link below is the glossary of our math book and should have all of the defintions.  If there is a word you can not find use the second link for a standard dictionary.

Please call me at school at 704-857-7038 (from 7:00-8:15;11:15-12:45 ; 3:15-3:45) if you have any questions of concerns or e-mail me anytime! As a team we are e-mailing parents on a regular basis to allow for more frequent communication. Please respond to these e-mails at your earliest convenience. We also use to the homework hotline for reminders in addition to daily homework so give us a call at 704-856-0741 (ext. 805).
