7th grade has a final project due for The Giver Wednesday, May 13. Students received the assignment description two weeks ago on May 1st.  It is very important that students adhere to the assignment requirements. Following instructions is as important as the quality of work.

6th and 7th grades are going to Cal State East Bay to see a live production of The Giver Tuesday, May 12. This will be a wonderful opportunity for 7th graders to see how the story and themes are played out on stage both artistically and dramatically. For 6th graders this will also be a meaningful opportunity as we are studying plays and how action in the text is enacted on stage. It will also be a good preview for the text that they will study next year.

It is crucial that both grades understand the importance of doing their best in these final days of school. Many students have slipped in terms of missing assignments, and poor quality work. Behavior and compliance to school rules have also declined drastically since students have returned from spring break. We are enforcing that rules for uniform, procedure, and conduct are adhered to in order to maintain a quality learning environment for all SPN students. *REMINDER* shoes are to be all one color, and shirts are to be tucked in at all times inside the building. Compliance is expected.

On a positive note, SPN did a fantastic job this year in the Diocesan Young Author’s Faire contest. I was so proud of our creative and talented authors at SPN.

Mothers - - We hope you all enjoyed the poems the students created for you. I for one thought they were beautiful and captured your essence well.

7th Grade Final Project for The Giver

Due Date:  May 13

Students will create a movie poster and an essay for the novel The Giver, by Lois Lowry.

Movie Poster Requirements:

Students should look at other movie posters for guidance on this project. Students should approach this project as if they were a director or movie producer and wanted to make millions at the box office.

Create a movie poster no larger than 11x14.5 that includes:

  • The name of the book and author
  • Original artwork that is relevant somehow to the plot
  • A one sentence synopsis of the story’s theme
  • A one sentence plea for why to see this movie
  • Four strong quotes from movie critics that express their interest in this movie. This requires students to be imaginative and creative. Critics must write to four literary devices: One critic will write using descriptive adjectives; another critic will write using sensory details; another will discuss the tone of the movie using a tone word and an example from the plot to prove his/her theory; and the last critic will comment on the director’s choices in recreating this story. Make sure to make up a name for each critic example = New York Times

Essay Requirements:

The purpose of this essay is to develop the student’s interpretation or argument to a question. *Students were provided with three essay options*

In this five paragraph essay students will take a stance on a question and provide three reasons that support their view. Students should use textual evidence to support their view; plot examples and quotes.

The essay must be turned in with the movie poster on-time for full credit.

Essay must be formatted per my requirements for typed work as prescribed earlier this year. Have Fun Working on this Project!

God Bless.
