Hello All!! Welcome!!
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students, WELCOMEto 8th grade U.S. History! My name is Mr. Coury. Please feel free to contact me with any questions @ Ecoury@tauntonschools.org.I look forward to working with all of you this year. I am confident that thisyear will not only be an excellent learning experience, but it will be fun,exciting, and successful - for all of us. I look forward to collaborating with you to helpyour student achieve their maximum potential.
Necessary supplies for this class: Writing utensils ~ Highlighter ~ Notebook (preferably a separate one) ~ Folders ~ Eraser ~ Marble notebook (Black and White journal) ~ Poster board (future projects) 3 Ring binders - for a portfolio ~ Other various learning supplies. This is a survey course – meaning we are focusing on BIG (major) topics instead of small detailed ones. We will be learning about many things this year including:What history and geography are – Natives, discovery and colonization, 13 Colonies, events leading to the Revolution, the Revolution, the Founding of our government, all the way to the Civil War. During the year, students will be asked to use history and geography to learn and master the skills they willneed to be successful in High School, college and beyond. Some of these skills include: working in cooperative group settings, reading comprehension,persuasive essay writing, note taking, project development, map reading skills,student independence, and classroom participation. I strive to make my lessons fun, exciting, and engaging while teaching you the necessary skills and information. I encourage students to use their unique personal, cultural, and family history within your learning experience this year with me.
I WILL CHALLENGE MY STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR VERY BEST!
**There will be a STANDING HOMEWORK assignment weekly. Every week each student is toread an article of interest having to dowith Geography or History. Parents are encouraged to help students withthis article. A standard article will be supplied each week in my class – butit is optional. ** Books will remain AT HOME and I will provide books to be used in class. I will supply other reading materials and homeworkas needed. **A few briefwords on Grading. I grade on a traditional scale from 0-100. This is an averagescore. Tests and Quizzes = 40%, Projects= 30%, Homework = 20%, and Classwork/Class participation = 10% of you grade. Students ALL start out with an A+!! Yep... I said it - an A+
