Welcome to my Webpage! Mrs. Rose and I are SO excited for the new school year. We plan on working hard and having a ton of fun this year. Our class is the only first grade classroom with a Promethean Interactive Whiteboard and we will definitely be using it everyday! Please remember to check your child's homework folder (only sent home on homework nights) as well as black Friday Folder every Friday. The newsletter with spelling words, homework, vocabulary words, and important information will be in the Friday Folder each week. Please keep all work at home as well as the newsletter to practice our spelling words each day. Please feel free to contact me ANYTIME by calling the school at 704.857.3111 and leaving a voicemail or emailing me at duffellap@rss.k12.nc.us

What we're studying in Reading: For the week of November 2, we are reading a story about the four seasons and working on double consonants at the end of words.
What we're studying in Math: We are working plane shapes and 3D shapes as well as symmetry and congruency.
What we're studying in Social Studies: We are focusing on voting.
What we're studying in Science: We are learning about the needs of animals.
What we're studying in Writing: We are working on remembering capital letters, spacing, and periods.
Ideas for keeping your child's skills sharp all year long: 1. Read EVERY night! Work on sounding out words and don't forget comprehension questions on your reading log! 2. Practice addition and subtraction using a number line, hundreds board, counting on, and counting back. By the end of the year first graders will need to be able to count to 100 and and recognize number words to 100!!! 3. Work on good handwriting! If you need handwriting paper to practice at home, please let us know! 4. Help your child learn to tie their shoes and practice good hygeine. 5. Make sure your child knows their home phone number, address, and birthday.
