Welcome to my Webpage!

We had a wonderful week and ended it by making homemade ice cream today to wrap our Miss Jill's Ice Cream Shop.

A HUGE thanks to Mrs. Crowe for her help!!!

Our White Christmas Canned Food Drive has STARTED.  Please send in any canned or boxed foods to help other families this holiday season.

The 2008-2009 school year is finally here!  I am looking forward to a fantastic year in first grade.  We have many exciting activities and events planned throughout the year.  I know my second year at Landis will be even better than the first!

Please remember to check your child's homework folder (only sent home on homework nights) as well as black Friday Folder every Friday. The newsletter with spelling words, homework, vocabulary words, and important information will be in the Friday Folder each week. Please keep all work at home as well as the newsletter to practice our spelling words each day.  Remember to sign the back of your child's Friday Folder that you saw their work!

Please feel free to contact me ANYTIME by calling the school at 704.857.3111 and leaving a voicemail or emailing me at duffellap@rss.k12.nc.us

We will be complete a pumpkin experiement with sink and float.

What we're studying in Writing:

We have begun Writing Workshop, and the students love it!  Writing Workshop is a program that will help students develop strategies for writing by drafting, editing, and revising.  This week we will continue to use our Writing Toolboxes and work on writing various types of text including lists and letters.

Please help your child with their writing!  A lot of students are struggling with writing complete sentences.  Please let me know if you would like a writing journal for your child to keep at home to practice writing.

Ideas for keeping your child's skills sharp all year long:

1. Read EVERY night! Work on sounding out words and don't forget comprehension questions on your reading log!

2. Practice addition and subtraction using a number line, hundreds board, counting on, and counting back. By the end of the year first graders will need to be able to count to 100 and and recognize number words to 100!!!

3. Work on good handwriting! If you need handwriting paper to practice at home, please let us know!

4. Help your child learn to tie their shoes and practice good hygeine.

5. Make sure your child knows their home phone number, address, and birthday.
