Welcome to Mrs. Huebner's Class!

On May 5th at 5:00 we will have our last parent night. We will meet in the ESOL classroom. You will be getting a note home soon! Following our ESOL meeting there will be a PTA meeting at 6:30. I hope you will join us ! I look forward to seeing you!

It's hard to believe that Spring is here! Everyone is working hard and practicing their English skills!

I am very proud of the work your children have been doing this year! All of our ESOL students have moved into Reading Mastery One. They are working on their letters and sounds. They are even blending words! Keep up the Great Work!

The third, fourth, and fifth graders are working on End of Grade (EOG) vocabulary words. We are working hard on this every day. This will help prepare them for their EOG test in May.

We are learning many new and exciting things!
We learn English through singing, reading and writing.

Parents and their children can visit the Parent Resource Educational Center at 314 N Ellis Street in Salisbury. It is open from 8:00 A. M.-5:00 P. M. Monday though Friday. Help can be obtained at this center on completing various school related documents, getting a library card, learning English, getting an interpreter, and learning more about community-school resources. Materials are also available for checkout such as: games, books, tapes, puzzles, flashcards, and videos. Mrs. Maria Nunez, ESOL Parent Coordinator, is ready to help your child succeed! Her phone number is 704-630-6131.

Your children are working on two computer programs at school. If you have internet access at home, your child can work on these programs there. You can also work on them at the library. The first one is starfall.com your child will work on their reading skills. The second one is prescriptive instruction (the link is below) your child will again be working on their reading skills. In order to use this website your child needs to know their school access code. Most ESOL students do know this. If your child does not please let me know and I can send this information home with them.

What is ESOL? Why is your child in the program?
ESOL means Engish Speakers of Other Languages.
ESOL is part of the No Child Left Behind. It was created to academically support all the children with low levels of English or non-English speakers new to this country.

Your child is in this program because of one of the following reasons:
1.They are not an English speaker.
2.They are new in the country.
3.They had an IPT score of Intermediate or Novice.
4.They hare having difficulties understanding subjects in the classroom from not understanding English.

WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD IN SCHOOL!

1.Children must listen to their teachers. Remind them to pay attention in class everyday and to leave the games for recess.

2.Children must sleep at least eight hours every night. This will avoid sleepy children in class. A tired child doesn't learn well.

3.Feed your children a good breakfast before going to school, if they are not eating when they get here.

4.Insist that your child ask questions when they don't understand something.

5.Make a scheduled time for your child to study or complete their homework.

6. Promote research, reading, and study habits at home. Set a good example. Take them to the library. They can have access to the internet and books there.
