Welcome to Mr. Woodward's

Elementary Education Department

One final thing, it is time for a “treat bag” for the kids. I would like to send them home on Friday, October 31.  If you could/ would like to send things in, please have it at school by Wednesday, Oct. 29. Some ideas include: pencils, individual snack cakes, crackers, juice boxes, erasers and candy. The kids will decorate their own treat bags, so those will be provided for them to decorate. We do have 20 kids in the class. On Thursday afternoon, I will put the bags together after school. You may start sending things in any time.

The kids had an overall good week last week. We are continuing to work on cooperating with one another, but we are doing a MUCH better job.

This is the last week of our quarter.  This is the last week that the children can earn their AR points for this quarter. Keep encouraging your child to read their AR books and take their tests. I will also be finishing up with our assessments.

The kids will be out of school next Monday, October 27. I will be sending home a note concerning conference times next week. The conference should only last 15- 20 minutes. I will be having these next week and the following week, prior to the time report cards come home. I will be able to meet prior to school, 7:00 and after school, 2:30- 3:30. More info will be coming home later this week.

As far as homework goes, the children will have some type of language arts sheet today and Thursday and math on Wednesday. I am also asking that the children read a book at home for 15- 20 minutes. I will send a blank reading log home. Please write the title of the book that your child reads by themselves and sign the piece of paper and return it on Friday. If the paper happens to become missing,  just put the titles of the books on another piece of paper and return it on Friday. The children may read any book that isn’t too hard/ easy for them. This may be a book that they have or a library book. If you need some books, please let me know. I also expect that the children are studying their spelling words nightly. Once the children have their spelling words one week, they need to keep them in their memory. You may want to give them practice “tests’” on previous weeks from time to time.

The children will also be bringing home their agenda home nightly. This is a place that you can see their homework and spelling words for the night/ week.

If your child has lunch money, they may go ahead and take it to the cafeteria and have it put on their accounts.

Our lunch time is 11:26. If you do come and have lunch with your child, please sign into the office first.

The children need to be responsible for earning their points. Encourage them to read their AR books and take tests on these tests. Ask your child how many points that they need and how many they have. The children also know that it is just not about their points, it is also about earning 85% on the questions. They should not me missing more than 1 and possibly 2 question on each test. If they are, they are: reading the book too fast, not reading the book carefully, not reading the questions and choosing the best answer, or the book maybe too difficult for them.

Keep sending in empty ink cartridges and Box Tops.

HOMEWORK:
The kids will have one worksheet each night: language arts or math, read 15-20 minutes a night and study their spelling words. The kids can read anything at home: picture books, chapter books, kids magazines, library books....... If you need books, let me know and I have some older basals that have stories in them. After your child reads, write down the title and your name. I will send home a "Reading Log" or you may just write down the information on a piece of paper and send back to school on FRIDAY with four nights of reading on the paper. The reading log doesn't need to be sent in everyday of the week, just on Fridays. Please ask your child questions about the story they have read. I will send home some sample questions that you can ask about the story.

Classwork and grades:
In class, we do alot of different types of work. These include reading, math, social studies, science, spelling and other paper. Some of these I do take grades on. Not all papers have a "grade", instead they may just have a "check" on them. Things that have "checks" may include homework, morning work and some reading/ math pages. If the math or reading is something we worked on is class, it may just have a "check" or may not have anything on it.

Just a reminder, you are welcome to come to school for lunch, but please go to the office to sign in.

In reading, we will be reading a story called “Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night”. The children will learn about camping. The vocab words for this week are: backpack, campfire, camping, hike, lanterns and tent. On Wednesday, all of second grade is going to do some fun activities with camping outside as long as the weather is ok.

The class will be learning how to take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests this week. Basically, the kids will read (AR) books that are on their reading level, they take a test on the book and try to earn points. The kids need to earn the number of points assigned to them, it depends on their reading level as to the number of points. They also need to get 85% on the comprehension questions. Most books on the second grade have 5 questions, so the kids need to get all of the questions correct or only miss one question. Most books on the second grade level are only .5 points, so for every two tests they get all of the questions correct for, they would earn 1 point. I know this was a short description, but the kids will pick up on this quickly.

In math, we are going to be wrapping up our first quarter things. We will continue to be working with two digit addition and be working on story problems with the kids. The children will also be creating their own story problems in class.

In social studies, we are going to be learning about People and Government.  Some of the key vocab words are: government, mayor, judge, law, rule, election, vote, ballot, right and Constitution.
