The Pensacola High Air Force Junior ROTC program has been a part of PHS since 1966. We regularly have over 100 cadets in the program, so we are a very visible part of PHS.

*******************************************************

Our mission is to "Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community."

The mission of the cadet organization is to provide an opportunity for applying the learned leadership techniques and for developing an understanding of the military command structure and the need for discipline, and a knowledge of military drill and ceremonies.

Objectives:

1. Encourage a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance and leadership.

2. Promote patriotism.

3. Promote habits of orderliness and precision.

4. Develop respect for constituted authority.

5. Develop the ability to perform basic military skills associated with drill and ceremonies.

*******************************************************

Students enrolled in Air Force Junior ROTC courses at PHS can earn up to 8 hours of college credit from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The students must earn a B average in their AFJROTC course. The cost for the college credits is $110 for each 2 hour college credit. Contact the PHS AFJROTC department at 595-1518 for more information.

NEWS: Two years in AFJROTC satisfies one of the two PE requirements for graduation.

*******************************************************

GOOD NEWS: AFJROTC Cadets who enlist in the military start at a higher rank which means a larger paycheck.

*******************************************************

NOTE: There is NO commitment to the military just because you were in JROTC.

*******************************************************

MORE GOOD NEWS: AFJROTC Cadets who apply for AFROTC college scholarships have a good chance of receiving a scholarship offer.

*******************************************************

REMEMBER: There is no requirement to join any military service after graduation from PHS.

SO WHAT DO WE DO?

LEADERSHIP: We are organized very much like an active duty organization with a commander, deputy commander, chiefs of operations, logistics, public affairs, personnel, information management, etc. All of these positions are filled by cadets. Cadets run the program and are in charge. The instructors advise and teach.

ACADEMICS: We study the History of Aviation, Science of Aviation, Science of Space, and the Policy and Organization of the military. We also cover military customs and courtesies, drill, communication skill, study skills, career opportunities, how to select and get into a college and how to pay for it. These are just a few of the many topics we cover throughout the entire four year program.

FUN: Yes, we have fun. We take field trips to military bases, have an honor society, have a rocket club, and an award winning drill team that competes against other JROTC units around the southeast. Our annual military ball is a big hit, as is our annual awards ceremony.

PHYSICAL TRAINING: Physical fitness is a major topic in Florida and America right now. For that reason, we have a PT program. We do various exercises during one class period each week.

*******************************************************

NOTE: the instructors are all retired Air Force members and are NOT recruiters for the active military.

The instructors

Lt Col Jon Peters, 22 years active duty
