First grade is awesome!!! We will have a ball learning!  The number one thing you can do to increase your child's confidence and overall academic success is to have him/her read. It doesn't matter if your child chooses fiction or non-fiction books or even magazines. Just encourage them to read regularly and for sustained periods of time (about 15 minutes, without distraction/interruption). It also helps them to see you reading. We'd love to have you bring a favorite book and read to our class.  If you don't have a favorite, I'll provide a book. Just let us know when you can make it. Your child will adore you for it.

We are now doing nightly reading for homework.  There are several good questions on the back of your child's home reading booklet to guide your child's interaction with their books.  Please sign and return the booklet daily so we can recognize your child's efforts.

We have a new Math program this year with lots of manipulatives.  We'll start with a focus on number sense.  Look for more information to come.  Keep an eye on the weekly newsletters for topics in Reading and Spelling words.  This first quarter we will review the first 25 high frequency words. Tests will be given every Friday.  We will continue using the Writer's Workshop format as the children learn to write stories and record their learning.  In Science, we will learn about living and non-living things. Social Studies time will be spent getting to know each other, families, our community, and more.

As you can tell, I am expecting.  My due date is October 5th.  I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child, and I hope to meet with you toward the end of September so we can discuss ways to ensure your child's success both during my maternity leave and when I return. Mrs. Brown, a certified teacher, will be working with the children in my absence.  She is wonderful.

Thank you, in advance, for your support and help this year.  Every time teachers and parents succeed as a team, the children benefit ten fold.

Please don't hesitate to contact me by phone or email. I'm happy to talk with you about anything and look forward to working together with you to ensure your child has the best opportunities for growth possible.
