We will have a ball learning this year! I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child as we work together to help your child succeed in every way possible. In today's world children will need so much more than basic facts, memorization, and the ability to reach only one solution to questions. It is my goal to help your child build critical thinking skills, responsibility, ownership of his/her actions, problem solving versatility, curiosity, teamwork and leadership skills, and so much more. The more you can be involved, the more successful your child will be. I'm excited to share ideas with you. Just ask:-)
The number one thing you can do to increase your child's confidence and overall academic success is to have him/her read. It doesn't matter if your child chooses fiction or non-fiction books or even magazines. Just encourage them to read regularly and for sustained periods of time (about 20-30 minutes, without distraction/interruption). It also helps them to see you reading.
Children thrive on consistency and learn best when they have recieved regular sleep and proper nutrition, especially in the morning (something with protein, limited sugar, etc.) In addition to a regular bedtime. Your child needs a scheduled time and place to complete homework. A place free of distraction and noise will help your child get the most out of this time and shorten the amount of time they need. It should be stocked with paper and sharpened pencils so your child doesn't look for ways to avoid the tasks. It is also helpful for your child to have had a little snack, at least 30 minutes to run off some energy, and to have used the potty before homework time. Your child's work is constantly analyzed to determine their strengths and needs, thus it is important that all writing, ideas, and work be your child's. Please resist the urge to sit with them as they need to increase their own skills of thinking things through and remembering/following instructions. That way they will have a higher self-esteem and be more confident and capable when you are not around. Nothing sent for homework will be new to your child. All tasks will be fully explained and with the exception of special projects, the goal will be to solidify and practice what has already been learned in class. If questions arise, please encourage your child to put down his/her best answer then talk with me first thing in the morning.
I have put a link to the Director of Elementary Education's website below. She has some wonderful parent resources. Please check them out.
Please don't hesitate to contact me by phone or email. I'm happy to talk with you about anything to ensure your child has the best opportunities for continued growth possible.
