Assignment for Algebra II Classes (November 19, 2008)

1. The cost of renting a van is $50 plus a charge for
each mile driven. If the total charge was $177 and
you drove 400 miles, what was the cost per mile
driven? Write an equation for the cost, C(in
dollars), in terms of the miles driven, m.

2. Find the slope of a line passing thru the points (0,4) and (-2,5).

3. Is (4,-2) a solution of the system shown below? Show all your work to prove your answer.

2x + 5y = -2
x + 7y = -10

4. Given the line y = 4x - 8

a) What is the slope?
b) What is the y-intercept?

Write the equation in slope intercept form of a line which is:

A) Parallel to the given line
B) Perpendicular to the given line

5. Write the equation of a line in slope intercept form which:
a) Has a slope of 3/4 and a y-intercept of 8
b) Has a slope of 4 and passes thru (4,5)
c) Passes thru the points (0,4) and (3,6)

6. Change the equation 4x + 3y = 8 to slope-intercept form.

7. Is the point (7,3) on the line y = 3x - 15?

8. What is the "x" coordinate for all points which are y-intercepts?

9. What is the slope of a vertical line?

10. What is the slope of a horizontal line?
