♥ HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY ♥

Mrs. Udy's class Valentine's Day celebration is Wednesday, February 10th at 2:00.  I have Valentine's cookies for the kids, but if you would like to send in treats/other items or $2 in an envelope for Mrs. Sandi (room mom) to get snacks and goodies, the kids would love it.  We will hype them up on sugar, then send them home to you.  You're welcome.  :)

* February 8-10 *

F.Y.I.:

  • Spring class and individual pictures will be Monday, February 8th.  If you would like to order a class picture, you must pay Monday - proofs for the individual photos will be sent home.
  • The Say cheese! SCOPE has been changed from Monday to Tuesday this month.
  • Thank you to parents who sent in donations for the owl pellets.  I was able to order two buckets of pellets!  They are scheduled to arrive this week.  I hope the kids enjoy this lesson on food chains.  I apologize in advance for the bags of bones that will be coming home with your children.
  • French toast challenge update: both classes tied for their progress report math averages.  I know.  I couldn't believe it either!  I am extending the challenge into "overtime."  End of the nine weeks.  Sudden death.  Winner take all.  With powdered sugar on top....  Oh yeah.  It's on.
  • Many students are handing in work, but not always giving their best effort (or writing their names on their papers).  Please encourage your child to pay attention in class, participate in class lessons and give it their all.  The skills we work on in class are used to build on later.  Missed concepts now will be detrimental down the road.
  • February Scholastic order forms are due February 19th.
  • No school on Thursday 11th, Friday 12th or Monday 15th.
  • Although Mrs. O'Bryant and I list all subject homework on our boards daily (and sign homework agendas) for the children to copy down and refer to in the afternoons, we cannot logistically pack each child's backpack.  We ask that you encourage responsibility at school by enforcing a much-dreaded consequence at home for not bringing home the necessary materials to complete their work.  Nightly homework is not due until the following day - If you find your child is trying the old "I already handed it in" line, yet you keep seeing missing task lists, have them bring home all of their work to show you it's completed.  We do not collect the work until the next day anyway!
  • Tutoring session invitations were sent home to those students we felt could use a bit of assistance in mastering certain reading and math skills.  If your child did not receive one and you would like him/her to be placed on the list for tutoring, please let me know and I will get a form sent home.  As spaces become available in the 4th grade group (meets on Wednesday afternoons 3:30-4:30), you will be notified.
  • The weekly folders go home on Tuesdays.  Please ask your child for them and remember to initial the conduct calendars after reviewing.   Students MUST return them to school the next day.
  • Please feel free to access my web page whenever you need and use the resources available.  There are good sites for extra practice worksheets that even include the answer keys for you.

Class Topics:

Math:   This week we will continue to work with fractions and mixed numbers.  Your child has been given a number line of equivalent fractions that they are to keep in their binder to use whenever needed.  At the end of this week we will begin learning how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.  The kids are really eating this topic up.  Help reinforce it at home by letting them help you measure when you cook.  OR, if it's like at my house now that baseball practices have started, dividing up the take-out food into equal portions.

From this point on, the children are expected to know their multiplication facts through the 12's.

Science:  We will review living things and roles in ecosystems for our chapter 7 test Wednesday.   We have been working on pulling important information from the text and putting notes together as a class.  We will continue to practice our new skill as we go through chapters 8 and 9.  I will (attempt to) teach the kids how to make and use an outline for information we pull from these chapters.

Homework:

In class happenings may require homework assignments to be adjusted.  Be sure to check your child's homework agenda if they tell you it is not the same as what is listed online.

Students should continue to practice their multiplication facts every opportunity they can.  ALL topics throughout the rest of 4th and 5th depend on the mastery of these facts.  Fact fluency cannot be accomplished entirely at school - WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
