We are entering the 2nd Quarter of school...
* I cannot stress how important it is for each and every student read nightly. Reading increases students vocabulary, comprehension skills, background knowledge, and builds life long learners! * Parents please look over your child's communication packet each Friday and send it back to school signed on Monday. The tests, writing pieces, and activities that have been covered that week are included in the packet. This is a great routine to get into to ensure that you and your child have another way to check weekly progress. * Please remind your child to always read their independent A.R. books at least two times through before they test. This will help ensure that the story is fully understood ahead of time. * Please stay on top of your homework each evening. As long as you make an effort to complete the assignment at home I will gladly work with you the next day on clarifying any confusing pieces. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are some ways to help your child read: · Pictures: Have your child take a "Picture Walk" before reading (go through the book and look at the pictures to see what might happen in the story). NEVER cover up the pictures in the story. They are there to help beginning readers and are an important part of the reading process. · Following text: It is ok for your child to use their finger to follow the text. This also is an important skill for beginning readers. · Discuss the Book: After reading the story, talk with your child about the book. What was your favorite part? Do you think this really happened? What might happen next in the story? · Wrong words: Occasionally your child will come upon a word that they don't know. This is ok. We are always learning. Use the following tips to help your child: Ask them to look at the picture for a clue. Think about what would make sense. Look at the beginning sounds and for chunks of the word they can recognize. Get their mouths ready to make the beginning sounds. If all else fails, have them skip the word, finish the rest of the sentence then return to reread the sentence. Ask, did that make sense? (Reading suggestions adapted from: Copyright 2007 Mrs. Richardson's 2nd Grade) Things Coming Up throughout the Year in MATH... * Money. Your child should be able to recognize and count pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars. The more he/she practices the easier this skill will become. * Place value to 1,000. Your child should be able to read and expand out numbers up to the thousands place. * Telling time to the hour and five minutes. As well as expressing elapsed time. * Comparing numbers to 1,000 using greater than, less than, or equal to vocabulary terms.
