October 15, 2009

This was a short week, but we've been just as busy as ever.  The children have already begun complaining when reading or writing time is over.  Those are the complaints that a teacher loves to hear!  In writing we were focused on describing carefully so a reader can picture what the writer's telling about. We began by describing our very large pumpkin, then a fury black (stuffed) cat, and finally, they wrote a description of their reading partner.  This Saturday is the traditional Indian celebration of Diwali.  We will be reading on Friday about this festive holiday.

Mid-term reports are coming home Friday.  Please remember that these are NOT academic reports.  It is too early to make a judgment about the children's academic progress.  Please keep the white copy and return the pink.

 RECESS  NEWS:

It's getting cold out!  Please have your child wear a jacket every day now. It's a good idea to keep a pair of gloves & hat in the backpack for "just in case" it's cold at recess time.

CONFERENCES:
If you didn't sign up for a conference during Open House night, you will receive a form to fill out over the weekend. Return it on Monday or Tuesday, and I'll confirm everyone's day & time by the end of next week.

Thank you so much for all of the tissues, sponges, and soap refill that was sent in.  I really appreciate it!

In Math, we are working on telling time to the hour (and half hour for those who are ready for it), counting nickels and pennies, solving story problems, and making sums of ten.  You can help by practicing with these concepts with your child at home, in the car, wherever you are!  The numbers that add to 10 are ones the children should become very familiar with, eventually without having to think and count.

As always, you can reach me anytime by e-mail, or call me at school and if you leave a message I'll return your call when I get a break.
