We hope you all had a wonderful and restful track out.  We are looking forward to another great quarter after a successful start to the school year!

This website will be used to communicate upcoming assignments, events, links for homework, and reminders to both students and parents.  Please make sure that you register for the site so that we can send you updates and reminders.  Also, please do not e-mail the teachers from schoolnotes, as only one teacher will receive the e-mail and cannot reply directly. 

*Parents, in order to increase communication between home and school, we are asking that you please sign your child's agenda nightly.  Students are expected to record homework in their agenda, and teachers will occasionally use the agenda for communication with you.  In addition, please see the Dolphin Team letter sent home on the first day of school for additional information and forms that should be filled out and returned.

Social Studies Friday Nov. 20:  Students reviewed propaganda posters from WWI and identified the propaganda technique used during this time.  Students were given notes on the effects of the Treaty of Versailles on Germany.  Students created a plan for a propaganda poster as an exit slip from class today.  Students tried to persuade someone to buy Liberty Bonds during WWI.  HEY!!!  THANKS TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS THAT DONATED THE LIGHTNING THIEF ($4.99) TO MY CLASSROOM!  I NOW HAVE 18 BOOKS TO USE WITH STUDENTS!  MY GOAL IS 35 BOOKS FOR MY CLASSROOM.  PARENTS AND STUDENTS CAN PURCHASE A GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR ME AND I CAN SUBMIT THIS AND GET THE BOOKS NEEDED.  $4.99 FOR THIS BOOK AT THE WLMS BOOK FAIR--WHAT A GREAT DEAL!!!!  THE MEDIA CENTER HAS THESE BOOKS ON RESERVE FOR ME....YOU WILL NOT SEE THEM ON SHELVES AT THE BOOK FAIR.

Science-Friday, Nov 20- I handed out a study guide (attached below) for the Quiz on Nov 25 and we went over the answers (attached below). We also started an Observing Soils Lab.  Homework- FINISH questions 12-22 and 24 on page 136.  Finish questions 1-5 on page 137.  Start studying for quiz!  Quiz on Wed, Nov 25!  Bring headphones to class on Monday!

Social Studies Thursday 11/19:  Students read and discussed key events from WWI and answered questions.  Students wrote a letter explaining about life in the WWI trenches and how they would feel being a soldier during WWI.  Book Fair tomorrow for track 1--Parents: Mrs. Austin has a wish for her classroom: The Lightning Thief ($4.99)  I have 15 copies and hope to get 20 more copies to use in my classroom.  What a great deal!!!  Students and parents can ask staff about donating these books.  The Media Center has them boxed and reserved for Mrs. Austin.

Social Studies Wednesday 11/18:  Students are turning in their textbooks this week. We reviewed the main points of the Industrial Revolution and started discussing the beginning and causes of WWI in class today.  I have books on reserve in the media center for parents to donate to my class...The Lightning Thief $5.00--what a deal!!!!.  Students or parents can purchase a certificate to donate one of these books to my class.  I have 15 copies and want 35 for my classroom so I can use with students.  Students go to the book fair this Friday!!!

Today students began work on their final propaganda assessment, a "Me Ad" with an accompanying essay that explains and analyzes their advertisement. The assignment sheet is attached.  This completed project (ad and essay) is due on Friday at the beginning of class.  Students will be given tomorrow's class to work on this, but will also need to work diligently at home to finish by Friday.

Science-Nov 17- Homework- complete Soil questions up to 65. Today we studied chemical and mechanical weathering as well as erosion.  Review answers on Density & TBB Quiz.  Watched a video.

 Social Studies Tuesday Nov 17: Return your blue text books now!  Today we discussed the affects of the Industrial Revolution on Great Britain and Europe.  Enlightenment timelines are due tomorrow!! The WLMS  Book Fair is fast approaching  this friday week 11/19-trackout.  I am wondering if parents would donate copies of the book The The Lightning Thief by Rick Riodan to me.  This book is a great price only $5.00 at our book fair.  I am building my own set of copies of this book to use in the classroom.  The Media Center is holding several copies of this book in reserve in case parents would like to donate books to my classroom.  Parents can purchase a gift certificate from the Media Center that I could turn into books for my class.  My goal is to have a class set by March so I can use it with my classes this year and in years to come.  This book is on my wish list!  Mrs. Austin

THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING THIS FRIDAY, 11/20!  Students will be visiting the book fair this Friday during their language arts class.  The book fair will feature the newest releases in all genres of fiction and non-fiction.  Also, teachers will have "wish lists" posted and students will also have an opportunity to check out books to read over track-out.  More information is home tomorrow!

Social Studies -Monday 10/26:  Complete flip book if you have not and turn in tomorrow.  Complete post card activity started in class today.  This is a creative writing assignment which goes with a simulation activity today on the Black Death and it's effects on Europe.  Students will write about their imaginary  travels through Europe during this time.  I have encouraged the students to use their imaginations and also knowledge of Medieval Europe at this time in this creative writing activity.  Students should fill their card with sentences about traveling through Europe during this time. Language Arts:  Wednesday, 10/21

Today students finished up final drafts of memoirs and turned them in.  This is a TEST GRADE so if you didn't turn in your memoir today, it is very important that you get it in tomorrow!  Tomorrow we will begin talking about fact vs. opinion and an author's purpose for their writing.  This will lead us into our unit on bias in editorials and propaganda in the media.

Social Studies: 10/21:  Students should have written definitions to the following terms in their journal:feudalism, nobles, fief, vassals,chivilary, manor, serf, clergy, cathedrals, crusades, middle class,vernacular.  Study these terms for a vocabulary quiz on Friday 10/23 or Monday 10/26.

Students are studying the Middle Ages this week in SS class.  Information on this time period is on pages 124-130 in the blue text.  We are working on creating flip books with the key facts and illustrations from our study of the middle ages.  Students should work on completing the page on Feudalism and the page on the Church tonight.  Key facts to include under Feudalism page include: definitions for: feudalism, serfs, fief, nobles, vassals.  Key facts to include on The Church page of flip book include:  A sentence or two about the importance of the church to the people, and definitions for clergy and cathedral.  We will continue to work on creating the flip book in class and finish up pages at home this week. Flip books are due Friday 10/ 23.

We're beginning the 2nd quarter with a study of the genres of non-fiction.  Tonight, get your biography project sheet and your CPR jobs sheet signed.  Parents, please look for these two things in your child's file, as they outline our Independent Reading Project and independent novel studies for this quarter.  Tonight's homework is to finish "The Open Road" reflection over your first quarter in Language Arts.  This will be collected for a grade AND put in your writing folders!!

Social Studies, 9/28 Monday:  SS Text books were distributed and should come home today.  The SS text stays at home until we track out again.  Students should read pp. 118-119.  Answer the following question.  What is a republic.  Answer should have  two or three sentences.  Give 5 accomplishments that happened during the Pax Romana time period in Rome.  Why do you think this time period saw such a growth in achievement?

Today we read ch. 18 in Tuck Everlasting and began work on our problem/solution writing packet.  Tonight, students need to read ch. 19 in Tuck and complete  the introduction paragraph section of their packet up to where it says "How can I make this more interesting and not so BORING???"  Tomorrow, we will continue on to supporting paragraphs and read ch. 20 in Tuck.

Social Studies: Tuesday 8/25:  Students turned in their top 10 list of Athens Achievements.  Students were given review questions to answer to prepare for the test on Thursday, 9/3.  Students were also given the instructions and rubric  for the I AM poem and picture project which is due Tuesday 9/1.  this will be a LA grade and a SS grade for 2nd quarter.

Today we went to the media center to check out books before we track out next Friday.  We are done with Reading Logs for the quarter, although students still need to keep them in their binders for collection next week.  Figurative language bookmarks were collected today.  Tonight's homework is to complete your vocab/context clues chart for the Section 3 vocab for Tuck Everlasting.  Leave the last column blank...do only your predicted meaning and the context clues that led you to that meaning.  Tomorrow we will begin preparations for our problem/solution essay and read ch. 18-19 in Tuck. 

Social Studies Monday, Aug. 24: Today we read page 314-315 from the new red text and started a top 10 chart for the achievements of the Ancient Greeks.  Students are to read page 116 in blue text tonight and complete the chart and decorate for homework tonight.  Students also read a myth in class and recorded facts about the god or goddess in the myth in preparation for the upcoming project on a god or goddess from Ancient Greece called the "I am" poem.

Language Arts:  Monday, 8/24

Today we read ch. 16-17 in Tuck Everlasting  and completed groupwork for the two chapters.  Vocab words for this week will be given out tomorrow, and our quiz will be on Monday instead of Friday.  Tomorrow, figurative language bookmarks are due!  Also, we will circulate at the library tomorrow, so be sure to bring back any library books you still have checked out from the beginning of the year.  Tomorrow we will also begin a five-paragraph problem/solution essay that is tied to our novel.  This will be turned in next week before we track out.

SCIENCE- Friday, August 21:  Today we went discussed the Beans and Rice Lab (Convection Currents).  We talked about how students were supposed to observe convection currents in action and relate that to the convection currents in the mantle of the earth.  We talked about how the hot plate represented the core of the earth (both radiate heat), the water movement in beaker represented hot rock circulating in the mantle and the movement of beans and rice represented crustal plate movement.  I collected lab conclusions.  We also went over all sections of Plate Tectonics Homework Questions and started working on the Practice Test.  Homework:  students should FINISH their practice test on Plate Tectonics.  Bring completed Practice Test to class on Monday!  Real Test will be next Wednesday, Aug 26.  For students who want to get ahead, chapter 6 Questions on Volcanoes and Earthquakes are attached as a download at the bottom of this page.

Social Studies Friday 8/21:  Complete the paragraph started in class today. Some students still owe us their El Dorado paper.   The paragraph we started in class was an opinion paper. Which city state would like to live in Sparta or Athens?  Support your opinion with facts from your notes from yesterday's lesson.  Students need to write an 8-12 sentence paragraph being cvareful to include topic sentence, detail sentences, conclusion sentence.  Parents proofread you rstudent's work!!!  Students read a myth today and viewed a short video on Ancient Greece.

Today we took a test over our short fiction unit.  Tomorrow we will begin pre-reading activities for our first novel, Tuck Everlasting.  This novel will require some additional nightly reading outside of the reading log.  Reading logs for week 4 are due Monday.

Social Studies Wednesday, Aug. 5:  Interim report card was sent home today.  Sign and return to Mrs. Austin by Friday please.  Students were given an instruction sheet for the brochure we are working on in class.  Students were in the computer lab today exploring websites and researching South American countries.  Each student was given a pink bookmark with web addresses  and passwords which will allow them to access sites at home.  Students with computer access can look at the culture gram website and complete their notes for culture in S American countries.  We will continue to research tomorrow in class!  Thanks to all parents that are donating items for our Carnival celebration on next Wednesday!!

Students learned about the Columbian Exchange today and the exchange of plants, animals and diseases between the Americas and Europe.  Students turned in their flip books on physical features of S. America and their Inca Posters today. Tonight read pg 334-339. Answer questions 1-2 in complete sentences page. 339. Parents we have a need:  We are planning a Carnival celebration for next Wednesday the 12th. Here is what we need: 130 small paper plates, spoons, and napkins.  We plan to taste(servings will be very small) foods from S. America on this day!!!  Please email Mrs. Austin if you could donate some of the store bought foods we will need!!  Food items we need:  canned pineaple 4 cans, canned black beans 4 cans,(20 small containers of tapiocca pudding-jello pack of 4 that are pre packaged and do not  require refrigeration works best ) milk chocolate - small morsals used in baking (4 bags),naustin@wcpss.net If you think of something we might want to try shoot Mrs. Austin an email!!

Today we reviewed the differences between: manipulated & responding variable; hypothesis & conclusion; scientific theory & scientific law.  We started a unit on Plate Tectonics.  Students should finish watching the video called "Continents Adrift".  Use the following link:

 Science-Thursday, July 30-  Today we finished reviewing the following definitions from pages 6-11 in book:  Scientific Method, Hypothesis, Variable, Controlled Experiment, Manipulated Variable, Responding Variable, Data, Conclusion, Communicating, Theory, Scientific Law.  See attachment below.  We also discussed how to design a valid, controlled experiment. Homework-  Tonight design an experiment (on paper) that would answer the following question:  Which paper towel, out of 5 different brands, absorbs the most water?"  (Record steps you would take and include some illustrations.)  Start to study the 11 most recent definitions.  The only brand paper towel we need now is Target.  Thanks for the donations!  Bring headphones to Science tomorrow.

Social Studies, July 28 Wednesday: Read in the blue textbook that stays at home: pages 330-333 on Colombia.  Answer 1-3 pg. 333 in complete sentences. Today students worked on flip books showing the major physical features located in S America and discussed how  location affects development in countries of S. America. Information Meeting on 2010 Italy trip planned :  7/30,Thursday Evening at WLMS, 6:00 p.m. in room 322- Mrs. Austin's room.  Social Studies: Tuesday, July 28: Today students took a clicker preassessment on South America.  Each student should have a blue textbook at home for homework.  Students began a flipbook on the physical features of South America. Students should complete the pages we started. We will be working on these in class. Flip books will be graded and are due on Friday. South America political maps were graded and returned to students.  Students will need to study the location of countries in S. America for an upcoming test next week. Science:  Monday, July 27- Today students received their quiz grades back on metric measurement.  We went over the answers to the quiz and we watched a short video on the Scientific Method.  Homework-Mimosa Tree Chart due tomorrow.  Mimosa Tree Research due Thursday.

Today we took a quiz over literary terms and genres of fiction and reading logs were graded.  This week we will finish our unit on short stories.  Read tonight for your reading log.  Parents, if you have old/discarded magazines you no longer need, please send them in with your child.  We'll be using them for a project towards the end of the week.  Thank you!

SOCIAL STUDIES: MONDAY, JULY 27: Students began the unit on South America today.  Blue SS Text books were issued and should have been brought home.  Students keep books at home until we track out in Sept.  Complete the map of South America--see page A 13 in the blue text for reference.

 SCIENCE-Friday, July 24-we took a quiz today on metric measurement.  Homework:  Mimosa Tree Charts are due Tuesday,July 28 and the Mimosa Tree Research is due Thursday, July 30.  Students have written directions for the research.
