Summer Reading Assignment
Reading Response Journals

A Reading Response Journal is a notebook in which you write about your reading.  In this journal, you will communicate thoughts and feelings about Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.  This journal is a window for me to look through to see what you are thinking and what you know about the selection.  We will continue to use these journals all year.

Remember, you will turn in this journal at the beginning of the year, and this is my first impression of you and the quality of your work.  YOU WANT TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION! :)  So do your best!

You need to use a 3-ring binder that has a clear overlay and paper protectors so that your pages stay looking neat.

You may type or handwrite (must be legible) your responses.
You need to decorate the cover of your journal to reflect your personality.

The first page of your journal should say Ender’s Game.

What are the expectations? (Requirements) You should:

1. Date each entry and write the chapter number at the top.

2. Vocabulary - As you read you will come across words you may not know or fully understand.  To help you expand your vocabulary, in your journal you will have vocabulary pages.  For each chapter, you should find two (2) words for a total of 30 words by the end of the novel.  On the vocabulary pages you must have the following:

A. Word

B. Sentence from the novel with the vocabulary word underlined

C. Part of Speech and definition

D. Synonyms and Antonyms

E. You will also create a drawing the represents the vocabulary word.

3. Journal Entries:

Assume one (1) of the following roles for each chapter.  You must assume each role a minimum of two (2) times throughout the novel.  In your journal, label which role you are assuming and respond in writing to that role.  Your responses need to be more than one (1) word or one (1) sentence.  You need to elaborate on your responses.

ROLES:

Straight Talker
Speak directly to a character in the novel and give your two cents worth.  If you could stop the action at a particular point/moment, what would you say?

Judge
Evaluate an action or a decision by a character or characters.  Do you feel a wise or poor decision was made?  Why?  What decision would you prefer to have been made?  Why?

Memory Keeper
From the situations, experiences, and events in the chapter, perhaps you remember a similar situation, experience, or event from your own life.  Maybe it was a time when you were bullied, isolated, or different.  Maybe it was a time you kept a secret, and because of that secret, events began to snowball.  Describe that situation, experience, or event; explain how it relates to the story/chapter.

Artist
What visual images come to mind as you read the story?  Create a collage or draw and color these images.  Write what your visual image means or represents in the story.

Palm Reader
What has occurred that you consider an example(s) of foreshadowing?  What do you believe will occur in the future in the novel?  Why?

Remember to make a good first impression!
Journals are due the 2nd day of class!!
Have a great summer!  See you soon!
