Monday, June 8th:
Below is a letter sent home today to both 6th & 7th grade parents regarding the Algebra Prognosis Test, which we adminitered today to students during math class.
RISING 7TH GRADE:
June 8, 2009
Dear Parents:
Your child took a test today … but it wasn't for a grade. The test was the Algebra Prognosis Test, an aptitude test, which is one of the factors recommended by the Diocese to be considered when placing students in math classes for the eighth grade.
For the upcoming academic year, the Queen of Apostles School will continue our practice of offering two math classes for our eighth grade students — Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Pre-Algebra is the program of study recommended for eighth grade students under the curriculum guidelines of the Diocese of Arlington, and Algebra I instruction for eighth grade students is considered an accelerated program. Offering two classes of eighth grade math helps us provide a course of study that better serves diverse student needs.
In accordance with Diocesan guidelines, we will consider the following factors in identifying class placements for Pre-Algebra and Algebra I in the 2009-10 academic year:
1. Grades from the 6th and 7th grade years
2. Score achieved on the TerraNova and Addendum in math
3. Score achieved on the Algebra Prognosis Test
4. Teachers’ recommendations
As always, we hope that you know that our primary goals here at the Queen of Apostles School are to enable our students to realize their full potentials and to provide them with the strong foundations necessary for them to succeed in High School. Providing two math classes for our eighth grade allows us to meet individual students needs and interests while providing a curriculum that meets the highest expectations of the Diocese of Arlington. And, of course, offering two classes provides our students with opportunities that are unusual for a school of our small size.
Here at the Queen of Apostles School, we are blessed with students who possess an array of interests and abilities, and we are proud that we are the type of school that can provide differentiated programs to meet our students’ competencies. Students at the Queen of Apostles benefit from the small community of our school as well as curriculum that meets their individual needs. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call.
Sincerely,
Anne Marie Hohman

RISING 6TH GRADE:

Dear Parents:
Your child took a test today … but it wasn't for a grade. The test was the Algebra Prognosis Test, an aptitude test, which is one of the factors recommended by the Diocese to be considered when placing students in math classes for the seventh grade.
For the upcoming academic year, the Queen of Apostles School will continue our practice of offering two math classes for our seventh grade students — Math 7 and Pre-Algebra. Math 7 is the program of study recommended for seventh grade students under the curriculum guidelines of the Diocese of Arlington, and Pre-Algebra instruction for seventh grade students is considered an accelerated program. Offering two classes of seventh grade math helps us provide a course of study that better serves diverse student needs.
In accordance with Diocesan guidelines, we will consider the following factors in identifying class placements for Math 7 and Pre-Algebra in the 2009-10 academic year:
1. Grades from the 5th and 6th grade years
2. Score achieved on the TerraNova and Addendum in math
3. Score achieved on the Algebra Prognosis Test

8th grade:
- It appears as though there might be a new form included in the high school registration paperwork for at least one school if not all the schools ... The Algebra Exemption test (for those students in Algebra) is administered at the school which your student will be attending next year. I don't know if the new form is in all schools' packets or only one. But if your student is currently taking Algebra, then s/he is eligible to sit for the Algebra Exemption Test, and s/he will sit for that test at the school which s/he will attend next year. Here is my advice: if there is a form to complete in your student's registration materials re the Algebra Exemption test, then fill it out accordingly and submit it; if there is no form, then no worries. Normally, I complete a registration list for the test. It is too early for that to have been sent out yet by OCS but I presume it will be sent again this year and I will complete it like I always do. Regardless, the Algebra Exemption Test is administered at the school that your student will attend next year. I hope this information helps!
- FYI that the Foreign Language Exemption test (for those students in Spanish) will be administered here at Queen of Apostles.

High Schools:
- I am posting information about some high schools' Open Houses today (8/24/08) on SchoolNotes so that you have it as soon as we receive it ... but it is not because there is any urgency associated with the information right now. We will help guide you and your student through the High School Application Process so don't panic!
Diocesan High School Open Houses:
- The Open Houses are a wonderful way for students and their parents to learn more about the schools. Each Open House is held at the respective school. I will continue to update the schedule as we receive information from the schools. Here are two schools who have provided dates for Open Houses so far (8/24/08):
Sunday, November 2 @ 1-4pm: Paul VI High School
Thursday, November 13 @ 7pm: Bishop O'Connell High School

1 container anti-bacterial wipes for desks/common areas of the classroom (I used these almost every day to clean the desks and this really helped us cut down on illness last year!)
2 rolls of paper towels
1 6-pack 10-16 ounce water bottles (for emergency use ½ will stay in the classroom and ½ will go into the school's emergency supply)
See you in a few weeks!

Homework assigned on Tuesday, June 10, 2008:
Grades 6, 7, 8: Have a safe, happy and healthy summer vacation! I look forward to seeing everyone in August. :)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Below is some information from the Fairfax County Public School system re the TJ admissions test and summer camps held by the FCPS.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Below I have pasted a message from the TJ website referencing changes to the admissions test that will be held this fall. Go to www.tjadmissions.org for more information.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will modify the admissions test for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) beginning with the December 2008 test session. (Note: This will not affect summer round testing on July 9, 2008.)
The TJHSST admissions test is a standardized mathematics and verbal reasoning test that assesses the knowledge and skills needed for success in a high school program for high-achieving students. Changes are planned for the mathematics and verbal sections that will align the test with the new Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) and admission tests given at comparable selective high schools for high-achieving students nationwide.
Quantitative comparisons will be eliminated in the mathematics section, which now will be composed solely of 50 word problems and computation questions. Analogies and word meaning questions will be eliminated in the verbal section, which will retain logical reasoning questions and reading comprehension exercises and add scrambled paragraph problems. The changes to the verbal section will reduce that section from 70 to 45 questions. The total testing time for the mathematics and verbal sections now will be two hours; this time frame will better serve students who also must complete a one-hour essay writing exercise on the day of testing.
FCPS will produce a new Student Handbook for the Admissions Test for TJHSST to help applicants prepare for the test. The handbook will be available free of charge for downloading and printing from the TJHSST admissions web site by July 1, 2008. Students without computer access will be able to obtain copies of the handbook from middle schools in all school divisions that participate in TJHSST, including the counties of Fairfax, Arlington, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William and the city of Falls Church.
------------------------------------------------------------
Below I have pasted from the TJ website the schedule for the Thomas Jefferson Admissions Test Prep Seminar that will be held this summer. Go to http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OACE/tj_testprep.htm for more information.
TJ Admissions Test Prep Seminar:
Open to students who will enter grade 8 in the 2008-09 school year and wish to prepare for the entrance exam. Students should have strong mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills appropriate to viable candidacy for admission. Taught by endorsed teachers, coursework focuses on admissions test-related mathematical and verbal reasoning, essay writing, and study strategies. Other topics include enhancing individual test performance and building confidence. Textbooks and workbooks are provided.
Participation in this course does not constitute application, admission, or acceptance to TJHSST. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Bring snack for 30 minute break period. Reduced tuition is not available. There are no refunds issued for this course.

Classzone.com (for our 7th & 8th grade math texts published by McDougal Littell):
- Students need individually to set up an "account" in order to access the online version of the textbook. One of the pieces of information asked for is the ISBN number off of the textbook.
- Algebra: ISBN-13: 978-0-6185-9402-3 ; ISBN-10: 0-618-59402-7
- Pre-Algebra (both 7th & 8th grades): ISBN-13: 978-0-618-25003-5 ; ISBN-10: 0-618-25003-4
- 7 Math (Course 2 Book): ISBN-13: 978-0-618-61070-9 ; ISBN-10: 0-618-61070-7.
- This does NOT affect the 6th grade, whose text is published by Scott Foresman and who use SFSuccessNet to get to their online version of the textbook.

The following is the ISBN info for Algebra to Go and Math on Call. I took the ISBN info off of the two books I have in class -- I don't know if the ISBN number varies for editions but, if it does, then get whatever is the most recent edition available if you want rather than my older editions.
Also, if you use Amazon or any something similar then you also can find the books in really good condition at very low prices as Used Books.
Algebra to Go is for the 8th grade Algebra class and Math on Call is for the 6th, 7th, 7th Pre-Algebra and 8 Pre-Algebra classes. These are great resources to have and I hope that you and your students will find them useful.
