QUARTER 3 BEGINS

1 more A-day to FCAT Writes, 11 A-days to FCAT Reading/Math.  ARE YOU READY???

Monday - Thursday, January 25-28
I wasn't on campus Monday, but students worked on writing the body of an FCAT essay to make it a higher score, and we finished reading, discussing and watching Act III of Taming of the Shrew.  If any remaining time is available, we will review for the Act II and III quiz, and maybe begin reading Act IV (this happened in period 4, so we read Act IV, scene i).  **Period 5 was significantly shorter today, so students will get a few extra minutes on Monday to finish their work.  The Acts II and III quiz will be next Monday and Tuesday.

If a student fails the quiz, they may report to the library after school on Thursday, Jan. 28, Tuesday, Feb. 2 or Thursday, Feb. 4.  I will pick them up from the library at 2:30 and bring them to my room to retake the quiz (they may do this each of the three days provided, if they wish).  IF A STUDENT IS NOT IN THE LIBRARY AT 2:30, THEY MAY NOT STAY TO RETAKE THE QUIZ.  This is an effort to help students learn to read throughthe text closely and to analyze that text at a much higher level, so students will ONLY have to re-take the questions they missed.

I CHECKED FOR A LONG WAY GONE TODAY.  IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, YOU NEED TO GET IT ASAP.  CHPTS. 1-9 SHOULD BE READ BY THURSDAY, FEB. 4/FRIDAY, FEB. 5!!!!!

Friday-Monday, Jan. 29-Feb. 1

We took a real-time FCAT Writing Practice today.  We also worked on Act IV of Taming of the Shrew.

Tuesday, Feb. 2

I gave students their FCAT essays back and showed a strong student example.  Students worked in class on a revisions, then I let them take their essays home to complete their work.  BOTH copies are due back next class.

Wednesday-Thursday, Feb. 3-4

We read Act IV today.  Two of five classes finished and were able to begin watching the film.  We'll continue our work after FCAT Writes next Tuesday.

Friday, Feb. 5

We watched Act IV today and spent time revising the FCAT Writing Practice.  Students finished this for homework.

Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 8-9

We took a quiz on A Long Way Gone, chpts. 1-9.  Our primary focus was, however, FCAT Writes, especially in Monday's classes and Tuesday's 4B.  The quiz took the entire period due to the shorter classes.

Wednesday, Feb. 10

2A watched Act III and IV to catch up on the action of the play.  3A watched Act IV and began reading Act V.  STUDENTS SHOULD READ CHAPTERS 10-16 IN A LONG WAY GONE BY WED., FEB. 17 (A DAY) AND THURS., FEB. 18 (B DAY).  THERE WILL  BE A QUIZ!

Thursday-Friday, Feb. 11-12

We finished reading Act V and watched the Act.  I then handed out the Non-Print Response to Literature assignment for the play.  We will be doing this instead of a character analysis essay.  I have not been able to get us time in the computer lab yet, but students should be collecting images and music to work with.  I'm hoping to get us in next week.

Tuesday-Wednesday, Feb. 15-16

I gave students their Developmental Scale Score from last year's reading FCAT, and we did our first FCAT Cluster lesson on Words & Phrases.  Students then took a quiz on the lesson.  I will be contacting parents of those students who scored 50% or below on this quiz with suggestions for extra study.
Thursday-Friday, Feb. 17-18

Because of Blitz, we only have time today to take our A Long Way Gone Quiz #2 and discuss what the Reference & Research cluster tests.  I'm explaining to students the importance of this skill in AP Language next year, as there will be a synthesis essay on that test, but students should understand this is the most challenging cluster of the four.  We will be working on this one in particular for the next two classes.

Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 22-24

On Monday, students worked on the Reference and Research materials in small groups, then took a mini-assessment on the cluster.  Tuesday and Wednesday, we only really had time to do PMA #5 (this was issued mandatory by the school).  We will resume normal classwork activities on Thursday.  THIS MEANS THE A LONG WAY GONE QUIZ #3 WILL BE ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY - NOT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY!!

Thursday-Friday, Feb. 25-26

All classes took A Long Way Gone Quiz #3.  We then began building background knowledge for Julius Caesar.  We watched a historical video and worked together to complete a study guide to go along with it.  We will begin reading the play next week, so ALL STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE THEIR RED LITERATURE BOOKS IN CLASS.

I've attached the video study guide AND the non-print response to literature we'll be working on after FCAT below.

Monday-Tuesday, March 1-2

Students were put into random groups today (I had them draw Jolly Ranchers for groups) and competed to answer questions from an FCAT released exam correctly.  Afterwards, we began notes on Rhetorical Strategies: Logos, Ethos, Pathos.  Notes included information on Logical Fallacies.  We'll be continuing this work next class and beginning our reading of Julius Caesar.  Students should bring a magazine to class on Friday and Monday.  Make sure it's a magazine they can cut up for a class activity.

Wednesday-Thursday, March 3-4
We played an FCAT review game using a released exam from 2006 (the latest one I could get my hands on).  Students worked in teams to answer multiple choice items and competed for candy.
Friday-Monday, March 5-8

Today we looked at students' 2 and 4 point responses from PMA #5.  I showed them examples of each and had them revise their answers for a higher score.  In a couple of classes we had time to begin reading Act I of Julius Caesar.  We'll work on this more as the week progresses and as time allows.
FCAT Schedule:
**Tuesday, March 9 -
10th grade students report to their Math Blitz teacher for FCAT Reading; testing is approximately 3.5 hours; they then report to 3A for the remainder of the day
**Wednesday, March 10 - 10th grade students report to their Math Blitz teacher for FCAT Math; testing is approximately 4 hours; they then report to 6B for the remainder of the day
**Thursday, March 11 - grades 9, 10, 12 report to 1A for approximately 3.5 hours during FCAT Science testing; they will then report to 3A, then 7

Friday-Monday, March 12-15

Today we read Act I of Julius Caesar and discussed/took notes. HOMEWORK IS TO DO THE PERSONAL RESPONSE ON PAGE 798 AND TO WRITE AN A.S.E. RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS 7,8,9.

Tuesday-Wednesday, March 16-17

We watched Act I of Caesar today.  I took up the homework, but many students did not turn it in.  I have already entered these grades into OnCourse, but I will also be contacting parents this week about this.  Students also took the Act I Response to Literature today.  They were allowed to use their books to help them respond to 3 literary analysis questions.  Students are receiving grade printouts from me this week.  If you haven't seen on by Thursday evening, please let me know.  ALSO, WE WILL BE GOING TO THE MEDIA CENTER TO WORK ON NONPRINT RESPONSES TO LITERATURE (click on the link below to open the document) FOR TAMING OF THE SHREW ON MONDAY/TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK.  Students should have their pictures and music on a flash drive to save time in creating their powerpoints.

Thursday-Friday, March 18-19

We read and discussed Act II.  I also took up late work for those who did not have homework lasst class. 3A read Act II with the substitute, so we watched and took notes on the Act, and I allowed students to work on the Act II homeowrk assignment in class. Homework is to write responses to questions 7-10 on page 818.  All answers should be written using SPECIFIC TEXTUAL SUPPORT.  Without it, students will NOT receive full credit!
