One of the best questions that I receive every year from elementary music students is when they ask incredulously, "There are fractions in music?" I love that question! It's so exciting to be able to show students how the disciplines they are learning in the regular classroom can be applied in other areas as well. I love to see the lightbulb come on when they suddenly realize the connection between math and music.  For example, this week we are working on the rhythmic values of the eighth note and sixteenth note in comparison to what they already know about ti-ti's and ti-ri-ti-ri's. 1/2 and 1/4...they get it! They were learning math all along and didn't realize it. Yay for music!

Thank you for all of the cards and warm hugs after the sudden death of my father. I am blessed with a daddy who loved Jesus first so I have no doubt where he is today...and that leaves my family with such peace. I pray that you have that kind of peace too.

The Jazz performance has been changed to Monday, February 28th at 1:30 p.m.  We will rehearse today, Friday, at 1:45 p.m. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Charis Murphy

Valentines hearts and chocolate candy

are sure to make our children feel fine and dandy.

But what they want more than anything else

is for those who truly love them to think more of them than of themselves.

It's easy to get caught up in everyday living

and forget that time is passing by, we're losing precious time for giving.

So let's read a book or sing a song.

After all our boys and girls won't be little very long.

Yay for Kindergarten! As you all know, Monarch Elementary has the best school students in Union County and our Kindergarteners proved that in music class this week. What a great group! We started learning how to read the rhythms "ta" and "ti-ti" and are also learning about the louds and softs in music. If you have a child in kindergarten, be sure to ask them what the grizzly bear was doing in his cave....and what happened when SOMEONE tried to wake him up! :)
