I have started reviewing submissions and I am already seeing several problems which, if they apply to you, must be fixed immediately:
If you submitted a team without a full complement of members, your entry does not count. Pay attention to the numbers in the drop down menu and comply with them in your (re-)submission.
If you submitted a roster with first names only, re-submit with full names. Last I checked, we do not have a Cher/Elvis ticket :-D
If you submitted names without a sufficient number of/balance of major & minor roles, please re-submit with complete info.
If you designated any policy researcher/advisors but did not specify the policy they would be responsible for, please re-submit with complete info. With four national issues in your platform, this should not be difficult.
If you listed roles with multiple names after them instead of listing names with multiple roles for each (which is what I requested), please re-submit correctly.
This is what I’ve found in just the first six entries I’ve reviewed, and it is not what I expect from TERRA students. Please help me to make this work.
The University of Miami School of Law runs a Litigation Skills Program which includes mock trials as a final exam for students. To do that, they need jurors, which is where you come in.
The trials will take place Saturday, November 20 from around 7:30 am to 2:30 pm. You do not need any special skills or training, lunch will be provided, and masks are optional. You will be in a real courtroom with a real judge listening to live witnesses, but the case is a simulation.
There are two levels of extra credit available for my class. The lower level is for attendance and participation (be sure to get a verification letter from them). If you want the upper level of credit, you will have to write a one-page reflection to include:
· What the case was about
· What your verdict was
· How your jury arrived at the verdict
· Your reflections on the experience (what it was like, anything that surprised you, what you learned from the experience, etc.)
After you provide me with your verification letter, let me know whether you want to go for the higher extra credit level and I will give you details on how to submit the reflection paper.
They will probably stretch the application deadline as they are short of jurors as of this writing, but don’t wait too long! If you are interested, you should complete the application form by the end of the week.

CNN just had a very interesting interview with Justice Breyer (he's plugging a new book) which included his views on the recent downturn in the public approval rating of the Court. Here's the web address to the article ... look around it for a link to the video if it's there.

Also, Justice Sotomayor recently spoke about a change the Court made in oral argument procedures, which touches on diversity and how women are treated in the workplace, even at that level.

Dear Stock Market Game Participants:
As The Stock Market Game program draws to a close for the Spring 2021 semester, it's important to revisit one of our first SMG lessons: Dear Stock Market Game Participants:
As The Stock Market Game program draws to a close for the Spring 2021 semester, it's important to revisit one of our first SMG lessons: why is investing important? In order to fully relate the SMG program to the real-world, you must understand the importance of long-term investing and that true investing is not just for ten or fifteen weeks. Time is your biggest ally as an investor. The more time you have to invest, the longer your investment can compound, or grow in value. Compounding is a financial phenomenon that makes time work in your favor. It’s what happens when your investment earnings are added to your principal, forming a larger base on which earnings may accumulate. And as your investment base gets larger, it has the potential to grow faster.
The younger you are when you start investing, the more you will benefit from compounding. Let’s say you begin investing at age 25, putting $200 a month in a tax-deferred retirement plan earning 9%. Your friend starts investing in the same plan at age 45, but puts away twice as much money as you — $400 a month. At age 65, you will both have invested a total of $96,000, but your investment would have grown to over $800,000, while your friend’s investment would be worth roughly $250,000. The reason your investment has grown so much more than your friend’s — even though you both invested the same amount of money — is because of 20 extra years of compounding. So, we encourage you to start saving now (every little bit helps)!
A 9% return on your investment isn’t guaranteed, and, if you invest in stocks, chances are your portfolio will earn more than 9% in some years, and may even lose money in others. But, if you invest in stocks for the long term, history is heavily in your favor - the average annualized total return for the S&P 500 over the past 90 years is 9.8 percent.
This will be the last SMG Week Ahead for the Spring 2021 semester. We hope you found them informative and enhanced your SMG participation. To continue your participation in The Stock Market Game, many states are offering summer sessions. To check availability and sign up, please visit www.stockmarketgame.org.
Have a great week ahead!
