VOCABULARY LOG: 12/1/14

  1. rhyme scheme: the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse
  2. sonnet: a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line
  3. Petrarchan sonnet:   Also known as an Italian sonnet. The original Italian sonnet form divides the poem's 14 lines into two parts, the first part being an octave and the second being a sestet.
  4. octave: the first 8 lines of a Petrachan sonnet with the rhyme scheme: a b b a a b b a
  5. sestet:  the last 6 lines of a Petrarchan sonnet with the rhyme scheme:                  c d c d c /c d d c d c/c d e c d c/c d e c e d/c d c e d c  *the rhyme scheme in a sestet is flexible
  6. line: a single sentence in a poem
  7. stanza: a group of lines in a poem
  8. couplet: two consecutive lines that rhyme in a poem
  9. brittle (adj.): to shatter or break easily (syn. = sensitive
  10. contrived (adj.): deliberately created rather than happening naturally or spontaneously (syn. = forced, artificial)
  11. oath (n.): a promise regarding one’s future (syn. = vow, guarantee)

REVIEW: ACTS 1-3: Please complete the following on LOOSELEAF.  Prepare to submit tomorrow, Thursday, 12/4.

1.Choose two major characters in Act 1 and characterize their relationship. How do they influence the plot that takes place in Acts 2 and 3?

  3. inquire (v.): ask for information from someone (syn. = investigate; ask)
  4. pun (literary term): a play on words, usually for comedic effect
  5. aside (literary term): a remark or passage by a character in a play that is intended to be heard by the audience but unheard by the other characters in the play) 
  6. soliloquy (n.): an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play)
  7. oxymoron (literary term): combination of contradictory words
  8. allusion (literary term): a reference to a person, event or thing in literature
  9. sable (adj.): very dark (syn. = jet-black)
  10. fain (adj.): pleased (syn. = happy)
  11. prithee: archaic form of conveying a polite request (syn. = “please.”)
  12. misogynist (n.): a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women (syn. chauvinist)

Your Task:            Carefully read several research-based texts. Then, using evidence from four texts you have chosen, write a well-developed argument regarding teen dating violence. Clearly establish your claim, distinguish your claim from alternate or opposing claims, and use specific, relevant, and sufficient evidence from all texts to develop your argument.
