What do lines visually appear to do?
Lines visually lead the viewers eye in an artwork.
Geometric Shapes
Are measureable, are made with a ruler or compass.
Therefore, a circle is a geometric shape.
Organic Shapes
Are created from curved lines.
The shapes can be found in nature.
The shapes have curved lines.
The method to draw is free-hand,or contour.
Name and tell the 5 kinds of patterns.
Regular
The same shape,the same space, the same color or the same grid repeated in exactly the same space.
Alternating
The element is repeated in an order at least 3 times.
Radial
A pattern that repeats from a center.
It may also be alternating.
Random
No order, no organized placement
Flowing
A curved line that is repeated.

Abstract marks
The cave artists used marks throughout their paintings.
Calligraphic line
A line that changes from thin to thick;or thick to thin.
Contour line
A line which defines the outer edges of an object.
Disguised
Cave paintings show an area which represents more than one thing, and sometimes these are like a puzzle and hard to see.
Earth-tone colors
The colors of oranges, golds
(ochre)brown, golds.
Movement
Many of the cave paintings appear as though the animal is in the process of running.
Negative spaces-
the empty space surrounding an object.
Over-lapped -
an object placed in front of another so one object appears closer to the viewer.
Positive space
-is the shape or space which stands out against the background.
Silhouette -
any 2-dimensional shape which is solid in appearance. It originally meant a side view of the face.
Repetition -many colors,lines,and shapes are repeated
in cave paintings.

This principle is used to keep an artwork from appearing too boring.
Variety
The element of________ is often considered the most beautiful of all of the elements. It originates from reflected light, and has hue, value and intensity.

The part of the artwork that is most noticed. Artists use element(s) to make this principle.
Emphasis
A visual method of relating one part of an artwork to other parts. This is also a mathematical term used in accurate measuring and calculation.

The principle that shows a visual weight which is symmetry or assymetry is named ____.
Balance
The element which shows depth and the relationships and positions of objects, shapes and lines. Negative and positive are used to explain what we see.
